Defense leads LHU past Mansfield

The LHU Women’s Basketball team used a smothering defensive effort to knock off Mansfield and move to 11-10 on the season.

MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (11-10, 6-8 PSAC) used a stifling defensive effort to defeat Mansfield University (2-17, 1-14 PSAC) 64-27 Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Divisional action at Mansfield.

*Of note, the game was called with 2:24 left in the fourth quarter due to a power outage throughout the Mansfield area.

The Bald Eagles used the team's defensive pressure from the opening tip as LHU smothered the Mounties all game long. Mansfield was able to get on the scoreboard early with the first bucket of the game at the 9:17 mark of the first quarter, but Lock Haven dug in defensively and did not allow Mansfield to score another point until the 9:19 mark of the second quarter as LHU went on an 18-0 run over a 10 minute stretch to extend the lead and never look back.

For the game, The Bald Eagles held MU to just 17.3 percent (9-52) shooting from the field and 15.8 percent (3-19) from three. LHU was also able to force 19 Mansfield turnovers in a stellar all-around defensive effort.

The offense was led by three players in double figures for LHU. Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh (State College, Pa./State College) led the way with 13 points and three steals. Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) added 12 points and five rebounds while Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) had 11 points and four rebounds.

Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land) played a strong game for Lock Haven, totaling seven points, five rebounds and a team-high five assists. Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn) added a team-high 13 rebounds and three assists.

The win also proved to a special one for head coach Jennifer Smith as it puts her at 99 wins for her LHU career. She and The Bald Eagles will look for grab her prestigious win No. 100 in the team's next game.

Up Next: The Bald Eagles will play host to rival Bloomsburg University when LHU takes on the Huskies. That game is set for Saturday, February 9 with a 1:00 PM tip.
