CLERMONT, Fl. – The Lock Haven University softball team (3-5) opened the PFX tournament this afternoon in Clermont, Fl. The Bald Eagles played the first two of ten games this weekend as they squared off against Purdue-Northwest (4-3) and Charleston (4-3). LHU knocked off PNW, 8-2 in the first game before falling 4-0 to Charleston.
Game 1: W, 8-2
Lock Haven was able to get off to a fast start as
Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy). Two batters later,
Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) drilled a double over the center fielder's outstretched glove to plate Ceely and put The Bald Eagles up 1-0 early.
With LHU leading 2-1 in the 6
th inning,
Casey Carpenter (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) stepped up to the dish and sent a 3-1 fastball over the center field fence to put The Haven up 3-1.
Purdue-Northwest added a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but Lock Haven opened the floodgates as the team put together a 5-run seventh inning to extend the lead to 8-2 and get the win.
Caputo led the way at the plate, going 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Carpenter finished with two RBI's and two runs scored while
Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) added a double and two RBI's.
Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) was solid on the mound for LHU, going 5.2 innings while allowing five hits and striking out four.
Game 2: L, 4-0
A pitchers dual was the story of the second game as
Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) and Carly Turner clashed. Neither team was able to register a hit until the 4
th inning.
Late in the game, UC was able to jump ahead and grab a 4-0 lead.
Traci Kromko (Tunkhannock, Pa. Tunkhannock) tried to start a rally with a single in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as LHU fell 4-0.
Slattery finished the game going all seven innings while giving up six hits and striking out eight.

Lock Haven will return to the field early tomorrow for Day two at the PFX tournament. The day will begin at 9:15 AM when the team takes on Augustana before facing Bridgeport to finish up the day at 11:30 AM.
