Bald Eagles split at Day 1 of PFX Tournament

The LHU Softball team went 1-1 in the first day of the PFX tournament in Clermont, Fl.

CLERMONT, Fl. – The Lock Haven University softball team (3-5) opened the PFX tournament this afternoon in Clermont, Fl. The Bald Eagles played the first two of ten games this weekend as they squared off against Purdue-Northwest (4-3) and Charleston (4-3). LHU knocked off PNW, 8-2 in the first game before falling 4-0 to Charleston.

Game 1: W, 8-2

Lock Haven was able to get off to a fast start as Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy). Two batters later, Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) drilled a double over the center fielder's outstretched glove to plate Ceely and put The Bald Eagles up 1-0 early.

With LHU leading 2-1 in the 6th inning, Casey Carpenter (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) stepped up to the dish and sent a 3-1 fastball over the center field fence to put The Haven up 3-1.

Purdue-Northwest added a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but Lock Haven opened the floodgates as the team put together a 5-run seventh inning to extend the lead to 8-2 and get the win.

Caputo led the way at the plate, going 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Carpenter finished with two RBI's and two runs scored while Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) added a double and two RBI's.

Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) was solid on the mound for LHU, going 5.2 innings while allowing five hits and striking out four.

Game 2: L, 4-0
A pitchers dual was the story of the second game as Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) and Carly Turner clashed. Neither team was able to register a hit until the 4th inning.

Late in the game, UC was able to jump ahead and grab a 4-0 lead. Traci Kromko (Tunkhannock, Pa. Tunkhannock) tried to start a rally with a single in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as LHU fell 4-0.

Slattery finished the game going all seven innings while giving up six hits and striking out eight.
