LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (9-9) split in a doubleheader against Millersville University (14-14) in LHU's home opener Sunday afternoon at Lawrence Field. The Bald Eagles took game one, 4-1 before falling in game two, 7-6 in eight innings.
Game 1: W, 4-1
The Bald Eagles knocked off The Marauders 4-1 in game one.
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning,
Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) sent a double off of the fence in right center that scored
Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) and put Lock Haven on the scoreboard and tied the game at 1-1.
In the third,
Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) broke the tie with a 3-run home run over the center field fence to give LHU a 4-1 lead.
The Bald Eagles' defense held strong for the rest of the game and gave The Haven the 4-1 win.
Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy) led LHU at the plate, finishing 2-2 at the plate with a run scored.
Caputo finished with her home run and three RBI's while Mathes added a double and an RBI.
In the circle,
Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) was magnificent. She threw a complete-game two-hitter while striking out 12.
Game 2: L, 7-6 (8 Inn.)
In game two, the Bald Eagles fell 7-6 in 8 innings.
Lock Haven led for a majority of the game, but the Marauders were able to rally and knot the game at 6-6 with a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
Millersville then scored a run in the top of the eighth to take a 7-6 lead and were able to hold the Haven at bay to get the win.
Rachel Gricoski (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) had a huge game for LHU. The sophomore finished the contest 2-3 with two home runs and four RBI's. Her three-run homer in the third inning turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead for the Bald Eagles while her solo shot in the fifth extended LHU's lead to 6-3.
Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) also tallied two hits in the game while scoring two runs.
Stefanie O'Grady (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) added a double.

The doubleheader originally scheduled for tomorrow (March 25) at Slippery Rock has been POSTPONED. The doubleheader at SRU is now scheduled for Tuesday, March 26 with the start times now set for 2:30 and 4:30 PM.
