LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (14-12) split today in a doubleheader against visiting Shippensburg University (16-12) at Lawrence Field Tuesday afternoon. The Bald Eagles were able to edge the Raiders, 3-2 in game one before the Raiders held off LHU, 4-2 in game two.
Game one: W, 3-2
Lock Haven outlasted Ship, 3-2 in game one of the doubleheader.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, LHU was able to hang three runs on the board to take a 3-1 lead.
Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy) tied the game up at 1-1 when she used an infield single with the bases loaded to score
Sara Gsell (Waynesboro, Pa./Wayneboro).
Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) then stepped to the plate with the bases loaded once again in the inning and sent a single back up the middle that scored two runs and gave Lock Haven the 3-1 advantage.
Ship made a late charge in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as The Bald Eagles were able to hold on for the 3-2 victory.
Caputo led the offense in game one with her two-run single. Ceely added a single and a RBI while
Rachel Gricoski (Frackville, Pa. North Schuylkill),
Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and
Bree Hilty (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) all added hits as well for The Haven. Hilty also scored a run.
Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) pitched another outstanding game in the circle, throwing a complete-game three-hitter while striking out 12.
Game two: L, 4-2
The Bald Eagles fell in game two to the Raiders, 4-2.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, LHU used a huge, two-run double from Mathes to cut the Shippensburg lead in half as the Raiders led 4-2.
Ship was able to hold off the final Lock Haven surge to get the 4-2 win as the teams split the doubleheader.
Mathes led the Haven offense with a great game at the plate. She finished the contest 3-4 with a double and two RBI's as she did her best to rally the Bald Eagles late.
Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) also had a good game at the dish, finishing with two hits.
Caputo finished with a single and a run scored while also pitching 3.2 shutout innings. She allowed just three hits in a strong effort in the circle.

Lock Haven will stay at home for the next series when the Bald Eagles host Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division foe IUP. That doubleheader is scheduled for Friday, April 5 with a 2:30 PM start.
