Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Defense, Farley lead Bald Eagles to victory

MacKenzie Farley scored the game’s only goal and The Haven defense held strong as the LHU field hockey team opened the 2019 season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Bryant this afternoon.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – MacKenzie Farley (East Berlin, Pa./ Bermudian Springs) scored the game's only goal and the Bald Eagle defensive unit looked solid throughout the 60-minute match, as the Lock Haven University field hockey team (1-0) opened the 2019 season this afternoon at home on Charlotte Smith Field with a 1-0 win over Bryant (0-1).

Farley scored late in the first quarter and her tally just 8:48 into the match proved to be the biggest difference maker. She slotted a ball under a diving goalkeeper midway through the goal crease after dodging a few defenders.

The Bald Eagles attack looked strong and outshot the visitors, 16-3.

The LHU defensive unit was equally impressive as the shutdown group didn't allow a Bryant shot until the fourth quarter.

Freshmen Jazmin Palma (Entre Rios Province, Argentina./Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus)  and Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, NY./Whitney Point) were both impressive in their Lock Haven debuts. Palma looked to be a real threat as she fired off six shots including several strong efforts on penalty corner plays that forced saves. Stevens added four shots.

Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago/ Bishop Anstey East) provided energy for The Haven midfield and her strong play in the middle portion of the field aided Lock Haven's defensive dominance.

Joaquina Orlandini (Concordi, Entre Rios, Argentina/San Antonio School) was called upon to make just one save and she did just that rounding out a strong all-around season-opening effort from Lock Haven.

The Bald Eagles will host local-rival Bucknell at home on Sunday, September 1 at 1 p.m.
