LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (1-1) was edged 1-0 today at home by local-rival Bucknell University (1-1).
The Bald Eagles opened the 2019 season Friday (Aug. 30) with a 1-0 victory over Bryant.
MacKenzie Farley (East Berlin, Pa./ Bermudian Springs) provided the game's only goal on Friday in the LHU's season-opener. Bucknell also opened the season Friday and the Bison fell to James Madison, 3-2 in Lewisburg.
Today's match marked the 50
th all-time meeting between Lock Haven and Bucknell, a series that dates back to 1954.
Bucknell scored the only goal of the match off a deflected penalty corner shot in the second half.
Defender
Karina Long (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) led another strong effort from the Bald Eagles' defensive unit.
Late in the first half, Bucknell threatened on a breakaway, but before the Bison forward could get to the ball, Lock Haven goalkeeper
Joaquina Orlandini (Concordi, Entre Rios, Argentina/San Antonio School) sprinted off her line and dove, knocking the ball away.
The two rivals remained scoreless at halftime. Of note, the Haven's defensive unit held its opponents scoreless through the first 90 minutes of the 2019 season.
In the 37
th minute, Bucknell's Emily Doyle redirected home a shot and put the visitors up 1-0. The goal held and provided key moment in the game.
Orlandini finished with four saves for LHU.
Freshman
Jazmin Palma (Entre Rios Province, Argentina./Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) fired off seven shots as she did all she could to spark the Bald Eagles' offense.
For the game, Lock Haven and Bucknell were even in shots with 11 apiece.
Despite the loss, several Bald Eagles, including
Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago/ Bishop Anstey East), played well for Lock Haven.
LHU will now head to Colgate for a non-conference match on Friday, September 6 at 6 p.m. The road game at Colgate marks the first of three straight games away from LHU.
