LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (10-10, 7-8 PSAC East) was defeated by visiting Shepherd (16-5, 10-5 PSAC East) 72-56 on Saturday afternoon.
The Bald Eagles grabbed the lead early, holding a six-point advantage halfway through the first quarter, but a nine-point run from Shepherd would allow the Rams to take a 12-9 lead with just over three minutes left in the first. Lock Haven hit back, stringing together six points to retake the lead, but a Rams three-pointer with 15 seconds left in the first would give Shepherd a 17-15 lead at the end of the quarter.
Shepherd took off in the second, controlling play in the first half of the period to go ahead 29-18. With just over five minutes left the Bald Eagles had a resurgence, tacking on nine points to cut the lead to just two points. After some back-and-forth play at the end of the half, Shepherd held on to a 34-32 advantage.
LHU struggled in the third quarter, as the Rams stifled the offense and outscored the Bald Eagles 18-8 to build a 12-point lead heading in to the final quarter of play. Despite their best efforts, the Haven was unable to chip away at Shepherd's growing lead, eventually falling 56-72 to the Rams.
Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land) led the Bald Eagles with 12 points while adding eight rebounds and a steal. Devine's eight rebounds tied a season high for the senior guard.
Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCasky) and
Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn) rounded out the double-digit scorers, adding 11 points apiece. Parker led Lock Haven on the glass, recording 10 rebounds to mark her second double-double of the season, while Redman added six.
Another six rebounds from
Jaynelle Robinson (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport (Monroe CC)) increased her PSAC-leading total to 204 (10.2/game). Robinson's 4.3 offensive rebounds per game mark places her in the top 15 of NCAA DII Women's Basketball.
UP NEXT: LHU will hit the court again this Wednesday, Feb. 5 when they travel north to Mansfield to face the Mountaineers at Decker Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
