Softball opens 2020 season

Facing two very talented teams, the LHU softball team opened the 2020 season today in South Carolina with a pair of games.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Lock Haven University softball team opened the 2020 season today (Friday, Feb. 14) in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the Freeze Out Tournament. LHU opened the day and the season with a 6-1 loss to a tough a West Virginia State team and the Bald Eagles closed Day 1 with a 5-1 loss to No. 17 Saint Anselm.
 
Today marked the first day of three at the season-opening tournament, and LHU (0-2) has four more games scheduled, including two more tomorrow (Sat).
 
Game 1 vs. West Virginia State: L, 6-1
West Virginia State scored its six runs on 10 hits and Lock Haven posted its lone run on four hits. The four Lock Haven hits came from four different players, including Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) who scored LHU's run.
 
Pitcher Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) struck out three in her first career start.
 
Game 2 vs. No. 17 Saint Anselm: L, 5-1
LHU capped Day 1 of the 2020 season with a 5-1 loss to No. 17 Saint Anselm today.
 
The Bald Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but Saint Anselm was quick to tie things at 1-1 in the top of the third inning.
 
Playing as the visitors in the neutral-site game, Saint Anselm scored another run in the top of the sixth inning (2-1) and the Hawks added three runs in the top of the seventh on the way to the 5-1 victory.
 
Chloe Kennedy (Elkton, Md./Caravel Academy) singled in Lock Haven's run.
 
Madalyn Dydynski (Nichols, N.Y./Tioga Central) struck out three.
 
Up next:
Lock Haven is set for two more games tomorrow (Sat, Feb. 15). The Bald Eagles will play Southern Connecticut State at 10 a.m., before taking on Seton Hill at noon.
