Baseball downs Glenville State in PSAC-MEC Crossover Opener

The Lock Haven University baseball team defeated host Glenville State 3-2 on Friday afternoon

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (2-2) downed the Glenville State Pioneers (6-3) 3-2 in the opening game of the PSAC-MEC Crossover on Friday afternoon.

After a scoreless first inning, the Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the second on a solo home run, taking a 1-0 lead. LHU would tie things up in the fifth, making it 1-1 on a Jake Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) triple to right field that brought home Reagan Lawlor (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township), who had been walked in the previous at bat before stealing second to gain scoring position.

The deadlock didn't last long though, as Glenville quickly retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth, going up 2-1.

Lock Haven took over in the top of the seventh, adding two to go up 3-2 on the Pioneers. Justin Lichtenwalner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) led off the inning with a double to right field, advancing to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a groundout from Gavin Troutman (Oley Valley, Pa./Catholic Oley Valley) to tie the game once again. The duo of Mastillo and Lawlor would once again combine for a run, as Mastillo smacked a double to cross Lawlor, who had stolen second after knocking a single.

Pitcher David Keller (Oreland, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) shut the Pioneers down in the seventh and eighth innings, not allowing a single hit while striking out two and walking one, before Lichtenwalner took over on the mound in the ninth to close out the game and secure the 3-2 victory.

Mastillo led the way offensively for Lock Haven, going 2-3 with a double, triple, and a walk and earning two RBI. Lawlor added a hit, two stolen bases, and two runs while Colby Hiddeman (Honey Brook, Pa./Twin Valley) and Lichtenwalner each recorded a hit of their own. Starter Scott Leitholf (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) struck out six batters, while Keller (1-0) earned the win. Lichtenwalner earned his second save of the season.
