GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (3-2) downed the Concord Mountain Lions (3-5) 6-5 in a 10th inning walk-off on Saturday afternoon.
After two scoreless frames to open the game, the Mountain Lions got on the board first, notching two runs in the top of the third to go up 2-0 on the Bald Eagles. Lock Haven began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the fourth, cutting Concord's lead to one on a fielder's choice. After
Jake Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) was walked to kick off the inning,
Isaac Porter (Beech Creek, Pa./St. Bonaventure) doubled to advance both runners in to scoring position.
Justin Lichtenwalner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) knocked one to bring home Mastillo, reaching base safely on the fielder's choice.
The Bald Eagles offense burst open in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs to take a 4-3 lead over the Mountain Lions.
Joey Lowen (Pittsburgh/Mount Lebanon (Onondaga CC)) led off the inning with a double, advancing to third on a groundout from
Gavin Troutman (Oley Valley, Pa./Catholic Oley Valley). A single from Mastillo would bring home Lowen to even the game at two, and Concord quickly made a pitching change in an attempt to stunt the Lock Haven offense. The attempt was fruitless, as
Cameron Kutchey (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) stepped to the plate next, rocketing a home run out of the park to put the Bald Eagles up 4-2.
Concord hit back in the top of the eighth, recording two runs to once again tie the game. The stalemate wouldn't last long, as the Bald Eagles recorded a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead once again. A single from Lowen would bring home Lichtenwalner, who had stolen second after reaching first base on balls.
The Mountain Lions once again tied it up in the top of the ninth, and Lock Haven was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, forcing extras. After holding Concord scoreless in the top of the tenth, a pair of doubles from
Quin Ambeault (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim (Frostburg)) and Lichtenwalner would give the Bald Eagles the win. After a one out double from Ambeault,
Santino Nave (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic)) took his place on second as a pinch runner. Lichtenwalner stepped to the plate next, smacking a double of his own to bring home Nave and give LHU the walk-off win.
The walk-off hero Lichtenwalner went 1-4 with a walk, a run, and two RBI while also earning the win after pitching the final three innings for the Bald Eagles. Over those three innings, Lichtenwalner gave up five hits and three runs while walking one and striking out five.
Lowen went 2-4 with a run and an RBI, while Mastillo went 1-4 with two runs and an RBI. Kutchey rounded out the Bald Eagles offensive leaders, going 1-5 with a run and two RBI.
Starting pitcher
Avery Eddy (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) gave up just two runs and three hits while walking two and striking out six across six innings of work.
Today's win improved the Bald Eagles record to 2-0 in this year's PSAC-MEC Crossover.
