MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Lock Haven University Softball team (3-5) split a doubleheader with Millersville (3-4) today in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East versus Central crossover action.
Game 1: L, 8-0
Lock Haven fell in game one to the Marauders, 8-0. Millersville came out swinging, plating three runs in the first inning on two hits. Millersville extended their lead to 6-0 on a Faith Willenbrock home run in the third inning.
Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./ Liberty) did all she could to try and get the LHU bats going, finishing 2-3 from the leadoff spot while notching a pair of singles.
Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./ Tamaqua) got the start for the Bald Eagles, recording two strikeouts in game one.
Game 2: W, 11-10
LHU wasted no time making its presence felt in game two. In the first inning, the Bald Eagles gave themselves a 5-0 cushion before Millersville even stepped to the plate.
Casey Carpenter (Springbrook, Pa./ North Pocono) got the scoring started on an RBI groundout which scored Ruppert. Two batters later,
Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./ Hammonton) stepped up to the plate, knocking a single down the right field line to score two more runs.
Alyssa Stover (Avis, Pa./ Jersey Shore) capped the inning with a two RBI single, giving Lock Haven a 5-0 lead heading in to the bottom of the first. In total, LHU finished the first inning collecting five runs on five hits.
The Marauders bats were silent up until the third inning when they recorded their own five run inning to tie the ball game at five.
In the fourth inning,
Chloe Kennedy (Elkton Md./ Caravel Academy) sent the ball over the fence to give Lock Haven the lead at 6-5. In the sixth inning, Ruppert continued her hot day at the plate, clearing the center field wall for her first home run of the year.
Lock Haven took a 7-5 lead in to the bottom of the seventh inning, but Millersville was able to come back, scoring two runs to send the game in to extra innings.
The top half of the eighth saw LHU plate three runs on three hits behind a
Casey Carpenter (Springbrook, Pa./ North Pocono) solo blast. Millersville came right back, scoring three runs of its own to send the game in to the ninth inning.
Starting with a runner on second base, Schellhammer hit a double to right center, sending Mathes home to score the eventual game winning run.
Ruppert finished the second game going 3-5 with 2 RBIs. Kennedy,
Sydney Arrigale (Blackwood, N.j./ Highland Regional) and
Riley McClellan (Granvillesummit, Pa./ Troy) all finished with two hits for the Bald Eagles in game two. Schellhammer improves to 3-2 on the year earning the win after sitting down Millersville in order to end the game.
