LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (5-8, 2-4 A-10) closed The Haven's Homecoming Weekend 2021 today (Sunday, Oct. 24) with a thrilling effort, but in the end, visiting Davidson College (3-13, 1-5 A-10) slipped by the Bald Eagles, 2-1, in an Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) double-overtime thriller.
With 4:05 left in the second overtime period, Julia Smith scored on a penalty stroke, giving Davidson the victory.
Macy Curtis put the visitors up 1-0 early in the second half, but Lock Haven tied the game at 1-1 just 5:49 after Davidson opened the scoring.
LHU's goal came off the stick of
Martina Spangenberg (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Piaget), who converted on a penalty stroke.
Joaquina Orlandini (Concordia, Argentina/San Antonio School) was credited with one save, which proved important in the tightly contested match.
Karina Long (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) was nothing short of spectacular all game for LHU. She was all over the field and directed a strong defensive effort from the backline.
Zhao Rodrigo (Valencia, Spain/Colegio San Bartoleme) also turned in a solid all-around effort.
The Bald Eagles came out firing in the first OT and looked to put it away with several strong shots, but Davidson goalkeeper Cato Roell was on the spot. She finished with 11 saves, each as important as the next.
Today's match marked the third of four straight contests at home as LHU closes the 2021 regular season with a four-game homestand. Entering today's conference matchup, Lock Haven had posted two straight victories, both of which came by way of shutout.
Lock Haven will close the 2021 regular season next Saturday, October 30 at home vs. nationally-ranked Massachusetts. The important A-10 clash is set for an 11 a.m. start and marks LHU's 2021 Senior Day.
