LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (2-0) defeated Salem University (1-2), 81-80, today at the Tri-State Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Seton Hill.
Lock Haven jumped out to a hot start, scoring 24 points in the first ten minutes of regulation. Salem matched LHU's pace in the second quarter, putting back 23 of their own. After the first half, LHU trailed Salem 38-36. The back-and-forth trend continued throughout the second half, before the Bald Eagles ultimately stole the late victory.
In the last four seconds of regulation,
Jackie Fetsko (Marion Center, Pa./Marion Center) and
Brooke Lawyer (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) made three combined free throws. Fetsko drew a late foul from Salem's Aleena Mongerie and
Adaliz Corbin (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) grabbed the all-important offensive rebound off of the second attempt by Fetsko. Corbin then moved the ball over to Lawyer who drew a foul, and drained her two free throws to take the LHU lead with two seconds on the clock.
Head coach
Jennifer Smith got a balanced scoring attack from the Bald Eagles. Five players finished the game with ten or more points. Fetsko, Lawyer and
Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley all scored fifteen or more.
Fetsko played strong on the glass, notching 12 rebounds and two blocks. She added two steals. Leidy shot 7-8 from the free throw line.
LHU scored 48 points in the paint and received 14 points from the bench. The Bald Eagles were also deadly with their turnover opportunities, scoring 23 points off of Salem turnovers.
Nadia Romanchock (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and
Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) helped pace the LHU offense, knocking down 11 and 10 points, respectively. Romanchock used her playmaking abilities to dish out three assists.
