Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second-half surge leads Women’s Basketball to 64-55 victory over Mercyhurst

Jaynelle Robinson led three Lock Haven scorers in double figures as the LHU women’s basketball team improved to 4-1 with the win.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Behind three players in double figures, the Lock Haven University women's basketball team (4-1, 1-1 PSAC) used a second-half surge to roll past the visiting Mercyhurst Lakers (1-6, 0-2 PSAC) ,64-55, on Saturday evening in Thomas Fieldhouse.

The win was Lock Haven's second in a row over the Lakers and equals the program's 4-1 start from the 2018-19 season.

Lock Haven got on the board first and took a 7-6 lead with 4:07 to go in the first frame off of a Jaynelle Robinson (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport (Monroe CC)) layup. Mercyhurst regained the lead in a back-and-forth quarter and used an 8-0 run to push the Lakers lead to 14-7 late in the opening quarter. Robinson knocked down a free throw to finalize the first quarter scoring as the Bald Eagles trailed by six after 10 minutes of play.

Out of the quarter break, Robinson got the scoring started for The Haven and quickly was in double figures with back-to-back jumpers to cut the gap to 14-12. Jackie Fetsko (Marion Center, Pa./Marion Center) rounded out a 10–3 Lock Haven run with a conventional three-point play to knot the game up at 17-17 with 3:51 to play in the first half. The two teams traded leads over the remainder of the first half, but it was Mercyhurst who usedu a 7-0 run to put the Bald Eagles at a 26-21 deficit as the teams went to the locker room.

Following the intermission, Lock Haven used a quick 7-2 spurt to knot the game up for the fifth time, this time at 28-28. Robinson later pushed the Bald Eagles back in front, 31-29, with a jumper in the lane. Both teams traded buckets over the ensuing four minutes and exchanged the lead multiple times, but it was the Bald Eagles taking command over the final 90 seconds of the period and took a 42-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, Lock Haven clung to a one-point lead, 48-47, midway through. Robinson added a three-point play with 3:13 remaining the game to push Lock Haven to its largest lead to that point of the evening at a 51-47 tally.

Down the stretch, The Haven converted multiple key free throws and broke through a frantic Mercyhurst full-court press to pull away to a 64-55 victory.

Robinson led all Lock Haven scorers with 16 points. Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) added a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double while Brooke Lawyer (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) chipped in 11 points in the win.

Lock Haven's opportunistic defense forced 18 Mercyhurst miscues, which led to a 24-5 advantage in the points off turnovers. The Haven also owned a 10-2 advantage in second-chance points.
