KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (1-3, 1-3 PSAC East) dropped both games of an exciting Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader with Kutztown University (7-1, 3-1 PSAC East) today (Saturday, March 13).
Game one today proved to be an offensive outburst and in the end host-Kutztown held on for an 11-7 victory. KU edged out Lock Haven 2-1 in a game two that featured sensational pitching from both teams.
Of note, Kutztown was ranked 10
th in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region poll.
Despite a sixth-inning rally in game one, Kutztown held on for the victory in today's opener, 11-7.
Lock Haven's seven game-one runs came off seven hits and Kutztown plated 11 runs on eight hits as the two teams combined for 18 runs on 15 hits in another offensive outburst. The Bald Eagles trailed 11-2 after four, but rallied for five runs in the sixth.
Jake Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) led the way as he went 3 for 4 at the plate. He scored three runs.
A trio of Haven pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts in game one.
Despite a brilliant game-two start from pitcher
David Keller (Oreland, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite), Lock Haven was edged 2-1 by Kutztown as the Golden Bears used strong pitching of their own to write most of the story in game two.
Between the two teams, four pitchers combined for 27 total strikeouts.
Keller carried a one-hitter through 3 1/3 innings. His final line included eight strikeouts, three walks and four hits in five innings.
Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after scoring on a wild pitcher, but Kutztown used a sixth-inning home run to break the tie and ultimately decide the outcome in a game where solid pitching was the theme. LHU's four game-two hits came from four different players.
Yesterday (Friday, March 12), Lock Haven officially opened the 2021 season. In game one of the four-game series with Kutztown, LHU earned a thrilling 3-2 walk-off win. Kutztown won yesterday's game two, 8-6.
Looking ahead, the Bald Eagles are set for a four-game PSAC East series with nationally-ranked Millersville. Lock Haven will open its four-game set with No. 10 Millersville on Friday, March 19 at home (12/2 p.m.) before playing a doubleheader at Millersville next Saturday (March 20).
