Baseball closes out series with Shippensburg

The LHU baseball team closed out its four-game series with Shippensburg today (March 27) on the road at Fairchild Field.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (2-10, 2-10 PSAC East) wrapped up its four-game series with Shippensburg (7-7, 7-5 PSAC East) today (March 27) on the road at Fairchild field.
 
Shippensburg took both games from Lock Haven winning the first game 4-3 in extra innings (9 inn.) and the second game by a score of 7-3.
 
Kyler Mellot (Bellefonte, Pa./ Bellefonte (Clarion)) took the ball in game one for LHU and turned in a strong outing. Mellot tossed six innings of two run ball while scattering six hits and recording a pair of strike outs.
 
The Bald Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a wild pitch that scored Justin Lichtenwalner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) who previously reached on a walk.
 
Lichtenwalner would come through again for the Bald Eagles producing a sac fly in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at two.
 
The 2-2 score would hold until extra frames in the ninth inning. Gavin Troutman (Oley Valley, Pa./Catholic Oley Valley) gave the bald Eagles a 3-2 lead in the top half of the inning but, the Raiders would win the game 4-3 on a walk-off home run from Shippensburg's Juju Cason.
 
Shippensburg picked up right where they left off in game one plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning in game two.
 
Lock Haven would battle back scoring a couple runs of their own in the top of the second inning.
Reagan Lawlor (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Licthenwalner each hit an RBI single to tie the game at two apiece in the second.
 
Shippensburg would use a three run second inning to take the lead from the Bald Eagles and ultimately win the game, 7-3.
 
Lichtenwalner went 3 for 4 in game two that went along with a pair of RBIs.
 
Lawlor, Joe Shannon (Warminster, Pa./ William Tennent (Mercer CC)) and Gavin Troutman (Oley Valley, Pa./Catholic Oley Valley) each recorded two hits for Lock Haven to lead the way offensively.
 
UP NEXT:
Lock Haven will have the week off because of a Bye on the schedule. Lock Haven will return to action on Friday, April 9 on the road against Mansfield. Friday's doubleheader is set for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
