Game Recap: Softball |

McClellan’s late home run, Waltman’s dominance the difference in Game 2, Haven splits

Pitcher Madison Waltman’s 10 K’s and Riley McClellan’s home run helped the LHU softball team win game two today and earn a split with Millersville in PSAC East action.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth in game two and it proved to be the difference in powering the Bald Eagles to a 4-3 game-two win over visiting Millersville University, which helped the Lock Haven University softball team (4-12, 4-12 PSAC East) split with the Marauders. Millersville (11-9, 7-9 PSAC East) edged Lock Haven, 3-1 in game one.

Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) homered in game one, but her solo shot to right-center field was not enough to carry the Bald Eagles to victory in the day's opener. Millersville scored three runs on eight hits and won, 3-1. Peters finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Haley Lestician (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) was 2-for-3.

LHU pitcher Kinley Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) recorded four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of relief.

McClellan's fifth-inning home run proved to be the game-winning run in game two, as Lock Haven won, 4-3. McClellan is the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week. Overall, she was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in game two today. Morgan Karasek (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Madison Waltman (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) pitched a complete-game gem in the game-two victory. She struck out 10 and scattered five hits on the way to victory.

Today's action marked the first since Lock Haven swept Millersville on the road last week (March 30). In that doubleheader, LHU scored a total of 20 runs on 22 hits.

McClellan was named the PSAC East Athlete of the Week yesterday (Monday, April 5), thanks in large part to dominance at the plate in four PSAC East games last week and that momentum carried over to today.

UP NEXT / SCHEDULE CHANGE:
Lock Haven will return to action on Thursday, April 8 when the Bald Eagles host local-rival Mansfield in PSAC East action (2:30/4:30 p.m.). Please note, the new date, as the doubleheader has been moved up a day in hopes of avoiding rain in the forecast for Friday. Lock Haven will head to Mansfield for a Saturday (April 10) doubleheader (1/3 p.m.).
