BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (10-20, 10-20 PSAC E) was on the road today for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East matchup with local rival Bloomsburg (15-11, 15-11 PSAC E).
The Huskies took game one plating their runs in the third and fourth innings. Lock Haven picked up the win in game two in extra innings to split the first two games of the four-game series with Bloomsburg.
Game 1: L, 5-2
After no runs through the first two innings, Lock Haven struck first plating two runs in the top of the third inning.
Morgan Karasek (Bangor, Pa./ Bangor) led off the inning with a bunt single. With one down and Karasek advancing to third,
Riley McClellan (Granvillesummit, Pa./ Troy) came to the plate and brought home Karasek on an RBI groundout.
Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./ Lampeter-Strasburg) was next up and worked a walk. Peters stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before
Haley Lestician (Lawrenceville, N.J./ Lawrence) laced a single up the middle to bring Peters home.
Bloomsburg plated two runs in the fourth and then three more in the fifth inning to take control of game one.
Karasek led the way in game one for the Bald Eagles going 3 for 3 at the plate and scoring a run.
Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./ Tamaqua) pitched well for Lock Haven going six innings and only giving up one earned run.
Game 2: W, 4-3
Lock Haven jumped out to an early lead again in game two scoring a run in the first and third innings.
In the top of the first,
Haley Lestician (Lawrenceville, N.J./ Lawrence) roped a double down the left field line scoring McClellan who previously reached base on a dropped third strike.
McClellan found herself on the base paths once again after an error by Bloomsburg and later stealing bag number 18 on the season. Peters singled up the middle giving the Bald Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
In the top of sixth inning,
Casey Carpenter (Springbrook, Pa./ North Pocono) launched a homerun to left center field pushing the Haven lead to 3-1. The homerun for the senior marks number 28 for her Bald Eagle career.
Bloomsburg scored two runs late to tie the game at three and send it into extra innings.
Lestician led off the extra frame with a double and later came around to score on an RBI single from Carpenter.
Madison Waltman (Turbotville, Pa./ Warrior Run) closed the door on the Huskies comeback bid in the bottom of the inning to preserve the 4-3 win for the Bald Eagles.
Waltman tossed a complete game going eight innings strong, scattering seven hits and striking out three.
Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./ Liberty) collected three hits for Lock Haven in game two. Carpenter and Lestician added two hits apiece and combined for three RBIs in game two.

Tomorrow Lock Haven will close out its series with Bloomsburg. Tomorrow's game marks senior day for the Bald Eagles as the team will honor its four seniors. Tomorrow's doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
