Baseball wins nail biting game one, splits with West Chester

The LHU baseball team got their weekend started with a split against PSAC foe West Chester on Friday afternoon.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (7-19, 7-19 PSAC East) split with West Chester University (18-10, 18-10 PSAC East) taking a thrilling game one, 7-6, but falling, 3-1, in the second half of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East division doubleheader.

Game 1: W, 7-6

West Chester got on the board early in the bottom half of the first inning plating one run on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. The Bald Eagles responded in the top of the third inning as Jake Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) looped a sacrifice fly to right field which brought home Gavin Troutman (Oley Valley, Pa./Catholic Oley Valley) to tie the game at 1-1. West Chester took a 3-1 later in the third, but The Haven battled back in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Reagan Lawlor (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) laced an RBI double, and Justin Lichtenwalner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) hit another sacrifice fly for LHU to tie the game at 3-3. Mastillo then notched his second RBI of the day, to go with three hits, when his double drove home Lawlor.

The 4-3 score line held until an entertaining seventh inning in which both sides plated three runs in the inning. Troutman started the party scoring on a fielding error, followed by Joe Shannon's (Warminster, Pa./ William Tennent (Mercer CC)) third hit in the game, which was an RBI single to push the lead to 6-3. Blaise Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) drove in Mastillo after being hit by a pitch in what turned out to be the game-winning run as The Haven held on in a wild bottom of the seventh, which featured two West Chester home runs, to win game one 7-6.

David Keller (Oreland, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) was credited with the win after going 6 1/3 innings and striking out six batters. Brandon Lingenfelter (State College, Pa./State College) got the final two outs of the seventh and earned a save by striking out the final batter of the game.

Game 2: L, 3-1

Isaac Porter (Beach Creek, Pa./Central Mountain (St. Bonaventure)) got The Haven going in the first inning of game two with an RBI single, which brought home Camden Moors (Johnstown, Pa./West Mont Hilltop). The Golden Rams added runs in the first, second and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead which held until the final as a strong West Chester pitching performance from Braeden Fausnaught held the Bald Eagles at bay.

Kevin Worek (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./ Abington) got the start on the mound in game two and pitched the full game going six strong innings and scattering six hits. The freshman walked only two and allowed three earned runs in game two's defensive struggle.
