LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Forward
Jaynelle Robinson (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport (Monroe CC)) knocked in a pair of layups in the waning minutes to break a late deadlock and propel the Lock Haven University (8-8, 5-7 PSAC) women's basketball team to a hard-fought 49-44 victory over visiting Millersville University (2-13, 1-9 PSAC) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division matchup on Monday night in Thomas Fieldhouse.
After a feeling out period to start the game, Millersville used a 7-2 spurt to take the early lead. Lock Haven responded by breaking the Marauders full-court press, scoring the game's next eight points to take their first lead of the game at a 10-7 tally with 3:27 to play in the opening quarter. The Bald Eagles added a layup from the hands of Robinson late in the quarter and owned a 12-9 advantage after a quarter of play.
In the second quarter, the two teams traded scores with Lock Haven taking a 26-22 lead into the locker room. The Lock Haven defense was effective in the first half, forcing six Marauders miscues and holding the visitors to 25% effort from the floor.
Brooke Lawyer (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) led all scorers over the opening 20 minutes of play, tallying nine points.
Out of the intermission, Lock Haven ran its lead to six off of a pair of
Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) free throws before the two teams traded scores again. Millersville slowly cut into the Bald Eagles advantage and knotted the game up at 30 points with 3:32 to play in the third stanza.
Robinson got into double figures off of a pair of layups to put the Bald Eagles back in front, but Millersville responded each time in a fast-paced finish to the third quarter as the teams headed to the final 10 minutes at a 38-38 deadlock.
A pair of scores from each team is how the final frame began before the lids topped the hoops again of the middle part of the fourth quarter. Millersville knotted the game at 44 points each with 3:44 remaining but the Lock Haven defense held the Marauders scoreless down the stretch to pick up a 49-44 win.
Robinson hauled in 16 rebounds to go along with a co-game high 13 points to post her sixth double-double of the year. Parker also scored 13 points, while Lawyer added 11 and
Jackie Fetsko (Marion Center, Pa./Marion Center) tallied a 10-point evening.
