LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – On Wednesday evening in Thomas Fieldhouse, the Lock Haven University (9-12, 6-11 PSAC) women's basketball team ran out to an early lead and never looked back as the Bald Eagles cruised past visiting Mansfield University (6-15, 5-12 PSAC) by a 66-44 final score in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
The win ended a four-game skid for the Bald Eagles and marks the program's seventh consecutive win over the Mounties. Lock Haven never trailed in tonight's victory.
Both teams traded baskets to open the game before Lock Haven scored seven straight points to build a 10-2 lead with 4:43 to play in the opening quarter.
Nadia Romanchock (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) bookended the early Lock Haven run with a three-pointer to open the game and a jumper as Lock Haven pulled away quickly.
Lock Haven added to its lead with a late-quarter surge. The Bald Eagles tallied nine of the final 11 points in the quarter to own a 19-4 advantage after 10 minutes of play. Over the opening stanza, Lock Haven's defense forced five turnovers and held the Mounties to a 1-of-14 (7%) effort from the floor.
Mansfield was able to carve its deficit to as low as 10 points on multiple occasions in the second stanza. It was Lock Haven having the last say in the opening half though, as
Carly Fitzmorris (Hamburg, N.J./Pope John XXIII) wrapped up the scoring with a layup to push the Bald Eagles lead to 29-17 at the intermission.
Out of the intermission, the Bald Eagles lead surged back to 15 points at a 33-18 margin on an
Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) layup with 6:34 to play in the third quarter. Parker scored nine of Lock Haven's 14 points in the quarter as the Bald Eagles took a 43-29 lead into the final frame.
In the final quarter of play, the Bald Eagles were efficient from the floor and extended their lead down the stretch to post the 66-44 victory over the Mounties.
Parker led all scorers with 18 points.
Jaynelle Robinson (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport (Monroe CC)) added a 15-point, 17-rebound double-double in the win.
Lock Haven dominated the glass owning a 52-33 advantage in the rebounding department. The Bald Eagles also posted a 17-3 advantage in bench scoring.
