Baseball falls short of Millersville despite barrage of runs

The LHU baseball team scored eight runs but came up short against Millersville today in home action at Watkins Field.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – After nine innings of action, the Lock Haven University baseball team (7-13, 1-6 PSAC East) fell to Millersville (17-5, 4-0 PSAC East) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action, 11-8

Lock Haven and Millersville held even through three innings with two runs a-piece. Zach Kaatz (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) and Jake Mastillo (Roaring Brook Twp, Pa./North Pocono) scored on sacrifice flies from Nick White (Halethorpe, Md./Lansdowne (CCBC Dundalk)) and Garrett Nepert (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson (Chesapeake County CC)), respectively.

LHU took its first lead of the contest in the fifth following a Joe Shannon (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent (Mercer CC)) single to centerfield that pushed Justin Lichtenwalner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) home. Millersville responded in the top of the sixth with four runs of their own to recover the lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lichtenwalner scored his second run of the day on a Blaise Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) ground out and Mastillo scored on a subsequent passed ball as the Bald Eagles trailed, 7-5.

With two runners on base, Gabe Stirr (Canadensis, Pa./Pocono Mtn. East) took Millersville's Kris Pirozzi yard for his second home run of the year to add three to scoreboard and put Lock Haven up 8-7. Millersville responded again and scored four in the eighth to move to the eventual 11-8 final.

Offensively, Mastillo notched a game-high four hits on 4-5 at the plate with a double and a trio of singles and also scored twice. Shannon was 3-5 at the plate today with an RBI and a stolen base to boot. Nepert went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
