Baseball drops doubleheader on the road at Millersville

Mastillo runs hit streak to five games as Bald Eagles drop East Division twin bill against Marauders

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Lock Haven University (7-15, 1-8 PSAC East) traveled to Millersville (19-5, 6-0 PSAC East) for Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division baseball action on Saturday afternoon as the two teams wrapped up the weekend series.

Millersville took down the Bald Eagles by a 12-2 tally in the opener before hanging on for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap to complete the three-game series sweep.

Game 1: L, Millersville 12, Lock Haven 2

Game one's script saw the Marauders control the momentum and own a 12-0 lead after four innings of play.

In the top of the fifth, Camden Moors (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont) delivered a two-out, two-RBI double to left center, driving in Cameron Kutchey (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) and Garrett Nepert (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson (Chesapeake County CC)) to make it 12-2.

Along with that trio, Jake Mastillo (Roaring Brook Twp, Pa./North Pocono) and Andrew Ramirez (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) were the only other batters to ink their names in the hit column for LHU in the loss.

Jeff Taylor tossed six innings of work, striking out six batters while only giving up two runs and five hits to earn the win for the Marauders.

Lock Haven sophomore Kevin Worek (Huntingdon Valley, Pa. / Abington) was tagged with the loss after allowing 10 runs over three innings of work.

Game 2: L, Millersville 3, Lock Haven 2

Lock Haven struck first with two away to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Zach Kaatz (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) drove a pitch to the third-base side and Castillo crossed home plate on a miscue by the Marauders third baseman to push the Bald Eagles out to a one-run advantage after a half-inning of action.

Lock Haven maintained a slim lead until the Marauders responded in the fifth with a solo home run to knot the game up at a run each.

In the top of the sixth inning, Moors brought out his two-out magic again. The Johnstown, Pa. native roped a single to left field that drove in Kaatz to hand the lead back to the Bald Eagles at a 2-1 tally.

The Marauders took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI-triple and a sacrifice fly to own a 3-2 advantage.

Lock Haven threatened with runners on scoring position in each of the final two innings, but couldn't notch the tying run as the Marauders held on for a 3-2 victory and a weekend sweep of LHU.

RJ Kruse (Milford, Pa./ Delaware Valley (Lackawanna)) started on the mound for the Bald Eagles and tossed five innings allowing only three runs on five hits. Garrett Starr (Dubois, Pa./Dubois) and Rylan Bailey (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) shut out the Marauders over three innings of relief.

The Bald Eagles pounded out 10 hits in the loss and stranded nine runners on base. Mastillo and Moors each recorded three hits to lead the Bald Eagles offense.

Millersville's pitching staff combined to allow just one earned run while striking out eight.
