Peters’ walk-off headlines Softball’s split with Lake Erie

The LHU softball team dropped a tight game one, but got some late-game heroics to split the day versus Lake Erie.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) delivered a walk-off double in game two, and the Lock Haven University softball team (11-8) split a non-conference doubleheader with Lake Erie College (6-18) on Wednesday afternoon at Lawrence Field.

Game 1: L, 2-1

The Storm grabbed a 1-0 lead after a scoreless opening three innings in game one, but Bella Schmitt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI-double to knot things up at 1-1.

In a tight pitcher's duel, Lake Erie notched a run in the top of the seventh inning and held on for the 2-1 victory.

Madison Waltman (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) started for the Bald Eagles and pitched all seven innings and allowed just two runs on only three hits. The sophomore struck out five and walked only one.

Game 2: W, 4-3

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Bald Eagles pulled out the gritty win. Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) got things going by drawing a walk and stealing second base to put herself in scoring position for Delaney Good (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg), who doubled down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3. At the plate with a chance to win the game for LHU, Peters launched a double which bounced off the fence in right center and scored Good to the delight of the Bald Eagle fans.
Kinley Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) entered in the fourth inning and earned the win with a strong relief effort. The redshirt-sophomore went 2 and 1/3 innings and allowed just two hits and one earned run. Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) started on the mound and went 4 and 2/3 innings with just four hits and two runs allowed.

Peters led LHU in game two with two hits and was 2-4 from the plate, along with her walk-off RBI. Sydney Arrigale (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) and Good each provided an RBI and tallied one hit apiece.
