LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men's soccer team (0-1) opened the 2022 season today on the road at Notre Dame (Ohio) College (1-0) and the host team earned a 1-0 victory, thanks to a late-game goal.
Notre Dame's Antonio Bittencourt scored the game's only goal in the 79
th minute of play.
For Lock Haven, standout-goalkeeper
Aitor Ruiz de Eguilaz (Euskadi, Spain/Koldo Mitxelena (Robert Morris)) made five saves in 90 minutes of action. On the other end, Notre Dame goalkeeper Rafael Baia was forced to make one stop.
Dean Lewis (Belfast, Northern Ireland/Model Boys School) and
Tom Pombor (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) each recorded two shots in the contest.
Despite being edged out 1-0 on the road in a hard-fought opener, the Lock Haven defense played well throughout the matchup.
As the season was set to open, Lock Haven was picked third in the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Bald Eagles are coming off a tremendous 2021 season, one where LHU won the PSAC East regular season title and advanced to the 2021 NCAA Division II Tournament.
Lock Haven was 13-4-2 overall a year ago which included a 10-1-1 run through PSAC play.
Last season, Notre Dame was 9-5-2 overall.

The Bald Eagles will now turn their attention to their 2022 home-opener which is scheduled for Sunday (Aug. 28) vs. California (Pa.). The PSAC East-West crossover match is set for a 4 p.m. start at Hubert Jack Stadium.
