Volleyball tops Bloomsburg in five-set thriller

Bald Eagles soar in fifth set to down visiting Bloomsburg 3-2; Haven sweeps season series with local-rival

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven volleyball team (9-7, 4-4 PSAC East) downed visiting Bloomsburg (7-13, 3-5 PSAC East), 3-2 (15-25, 29-27, 25-23, 22-25 & 15-9), tonight (Friday, Oct. 20) in a thrilling five-set Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match.
 
The Bald Eagles soared in the fifth set and the dominating late-match effort helped Lock Haven secure the important PSAC East win. The victory helped The Haven sweep the two-match season series with the Huskies.
 
On Sept. 22, Lock Haven opened 2023 PSAC East play with a dominating 3-1 win over Bloomsburg on the road. Tonight's victory helped Lock Haven remain at No. 4 in the PSAC East standings. The top-four teams in the East will qualify for the playoffs.
 
Leading the way for Lock Haven was Alyssa Daley (Everett, Pa./Everett), Reagan Irons (Tyrone, Pa./Tyrone), Emma Kelly (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) and Evie Jane Rembold (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain).
 
Daley hit .314 with 16 kills.
 
Irons had 16 kills, while Kelly added 14 and Rembold closed out the win with 11 kills.
 
Kelly Gaston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) dished out 45 assists.
 
Natalie Acevedo (Camuy, Puerto Rico/Paula Freire Social Justice Charter School) turned in a notable effort on both sides, finishing with 10 assists and 22 digs.
 
Gaston added 17 digs and Kelly had 13.
 
Madison Eckley (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle) chipped in with 11 digs.
 
As a team, Lock Haven benefitted from eight aces.
 
After dropping the first set, 25-15, the Bald Eagles responded in a big way and tied the match at 1-1 after winning a marathon second set, 29-27.
 
Lock Haven went up 2-1 with a 25-23 advantage in the third set.
 
Visiting Bloomsburg tied the match at 2-2 with a hard-fought 25-22 win in the fourth set.
 
In the fifth set, Lock Haven put the match away with a sizzling offensive effort. The Bald Eagles hit .474 with nine kills and no errors on the way to the 15-9 win that secured the important home victory.
 
UP NEXT:
Today's match opened a six-match homestand for The Haven. The Bald Eagles will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 26 when they host Salem in non-conference action. Please note, the match is now set for a 4:30 p.m. start.
 
Thursday's match with Salem will open a busy three-day stretch as Lock Haven will play on three consecutive days. On Friday, Oct. 27, the Bald Eagles host East Stroudsburg (Youth Volleyball Night) and Lock Haven will host Kutztown on Saturday, Oct. 28 for a Dig Pink Night promotion.
