Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Kutztown

Bald Eagles close PSAC East series at Kutztown Sunday.

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (9-10, 3-6 PSAC East) dropped both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader today on the road at Kutztown University (15-8, 3-3 PSAC East).

Kutztown edged out LHU, 1-0 in a game-one pitcher's duel, and the hosts completed the sweep with a 5-4 extra-inning (11 inn.) victory in a game-two clash.

Game one featured standout pitching from both Lock Haven starter Kevin Worek (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) and KU starter Dominic Proietto as each went the distance. They combined for 15 strikeouts in a scheduled seven-inning game that lasted just one hour and 22 minutes.

Worek was the tough-luck loser despite a brilliant outing from the Bald Eagle. Over six innings, he struck out eight and allowed two walks. He scattered just five hits and allowed the one run.

Proietto struck out seven on the way to the win for the hosts. Kutztown scored its one run on five hits and Lock Haven recorded three hits in game one including a triple from Francisco Taveras (Muhlenberg, Pa./Muhlenberg (Lehigh Carbon CC)).

Ethan Martini's RBI-double in the fifth provided the game's ultimate difference maker for KU.

Kutztown once again edged out a victory in game two as the Golden Bears won 5-4 in 11 innings of a scheduled nine-inning game. LHU scored four runs on eight hits and Kutztown plated five runs on 12 hits.

Gavin Troutman (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) had two hits and scored two runs in game two, and Taveras had a three-hit game. Lukas Schutz (Metamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) produced two hits for The Haven.

Lock Haven led late, but Kutztown rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 3-3. The Bald Eagles took the lead in the top of the 11th, but once again Kutztown rallied and found the game-winning runs.

Lock Haven and Kutztown opened the three-game PSAC East series on Friday in The Haven, and the Golden Bears won, 4-1.

Up Next for Lock Haven:
The Bald Eagles will return to action on Friday, March 31 when they travel to nationally-ranked Millersville for a scheduled nine-inning PSAC East game at 2 p.m.
