PHILADELPHIA – The Lock Haven University baseball team (5-4) traveled to Chestnut Hill (1-7) today, and the Bald Eagles split the Saturday afternoon doubleheader. Lock Haven was edged out 8-6 in game one, but The Haven bounced back, and picked up the 4-2 victory in a defensive game two.Â
Game 1: L, 8-6Â
To start off the afternoon, the Bald Eagles pushed out a 3-0 start in the first inning. In a bases loaded at-bat, Joe Shannon (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent (Mercer CC)) scored Gavin Troutman (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) for the first run. A sacrifice fly by Zach Kaatz (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) doubled their run support, and Garrett Nepert (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson (Chesapeake County CC)) cleared the final runner into home with a RBI-single, which drove in Blaise Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove). Â
Chestnut Hill powered a grand slam over the wall, and a sac fly to take a 5-3 lead after just the first inning. Â
On a fielding error, Andrew Ramirez (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) reached base, allowing Kaatz to score to close the gap to just 5-4 in the top of the third. Â
The Griffins added another run in the bottom of the fourth to bring their lead back to two. Â
Ramirez stepped up in his next at bat, sending a RBI-double to the gap in the top of the fifth to make the scoreboard, 6-5. Nepert broke the lead and with his game tying RBI-single after the top of the sixth.Â
Chestnut Hill finished off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, sending two more runs to claim the game one victory, 8-6.Â
Game 2: W, 4-2Â
Game two saw more of a defensive minded game with only one run scored until the fifth inning. The Griffins sent a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning to ink the only run. Â
LHU exploded in the top of the fifth, dropping four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Troutman started it off, reaching on an error that scored Brendan Jordan (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy (Bucks County CC)). Francisco Taveras (Muhlenberg, Pa./Muhlenberg (Lehigh Carbon CC)) benefitted from the same Griffin mistake to score Ramirez. Â
Justin Lichtenwalner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) finished off the scoring in the inning with a two-run single to take the three-run lead.Â
Chestnut Hill sent another home run over the wall in the bottom of the sixth, but LHU held strong and earned the 4-2 victory on the afternoon.Â
Kevin Worek (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) picked up another impressive victory, pitching the entire game, striking out seven while only giving up two earned runs, and four hits.Â
