Baseball Splits Road Doubleheader with Chestnut Hill

The Lock Haven baseball team traveled to Philadelphia for a Saturday doubleheader, which saw the Bald Eagles split the road twin bill.

PHILADELPHIA – The Lock Haven University baseball team (5-4) traveled to Chestnut Hill (1-7) today, and the Bald Eagles split the Saturday afternoon doubleheader. Lock Haven was edged out 8-6 in game one, but The Haven bounced back, and picked up the 4-2 victory in a defensive game two.

Game 1: L, 8-6

To start off the afternoon, the Bald Eagles pushed out a 3-0 start in the first inning. In a bases loaded at-bat, Joe Shannon (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent (Mercer CC)) scored Gavin Troutman (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) for the first run. A sacrifice fly by Zach Kaatz (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) doubled their run support, and Garrett Nepert (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson (Chesapeake County CC)) cleared the final runner into home with a RBI-single, which drove in Blaise Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove).

Chestnut Hill powered a grand slam over the wall, and a sac fly to take a 5-3 lead after just the first inning.

On a fielding error, Andrew Ramirez (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) reached base, allowing Kaatz to score to close the gap to just 5-4 in the top of the third.

The Griffins added another run in the bottom of the fourth to bring their lead back to two.

Ramirez stepped up in his next at bat, sending a RBI-double to the gap in the top of the fifth to make the scoreboard, 6-5. Nepert broke the lead and with his game tying RBI-single after the top of the sixth.

Chestnut Hill finished off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, sending two more runs to claim the game one victory, 8-6.

Game 2: W, 4-2

Game two saw more of a defensive minded game with only one run scored until the fifth inning. The Griffins sent a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning to ink the only run.

LHU exploded in the top of the fifth, dropping four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Troutman started it off, reaching on an error that scored Brendan Jordan (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy (Bucks County CC)). Francisco Taveras (Muhlenberg, Pa./Muhlenberg (Lehigh Carbon CC)) benefitted from the same Griffin mistake to score Ramirez.

Justin Lichtenwalner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) finished off the scoring in the inning with a two-run single to take the three-run lead.

Chestnut Hill sent another home run over the wall in the bottom of the sixth, but LHU held strong and earned the 4-2 victory on the afternoon.

Kevin Worek (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) picked up another impressive victory, pitching the entire game, striking out seven while only giving up two earned runs, and four hits.
