Softball Wins Thrilling Game 1 in Extras, Splits at Ship

Bald Eagles take game one on the road at Shippensburg, record PSAC East split.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (20-20, 10-14 PSAC East) split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader today on the road at Shippensburg University (20-15, 14-10 PSAC East).

The Bald Eagles won a thriller in game one, edging out Ship, 8-7 in nine-innings. Following the extra-inning battle, Shippensburg won game two, 8-1.

Game 1 Recap: Lock Haven 8 – Shippensburg 7 (9 innings)

Game one proved to be a back-and-forth extra-inning thriller that saw the two teams combine for 15 runs on 24 hits.

In the end, the Bald Eagles plated the game-winning run in the top of the ninth, thanks to an RBI-single from Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy), and Lock Haven held off host Shippensburg in the bottom half of the inning for the victory.

Lock Haven scored its eight runs on 10 hits and jumped on Shippensburg early. The Bald Eagles scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and led 3-0 after one. LHU extended the lead to 7-2, but the Raiders slowly battled back and a three-run Ship effort in the bottom of the seventh tied the game at 7-7.

The Haven had an answer for Shippensburg's seventh-inning rally and found the eventual game-deciding run off the bat of McClellan in the ninth.

Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Haley Lestician (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to jump start the Lock Haven offense.

Delaney Good's (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) strong play continued and she recorded two hits, and scored two runs. Peters was credited with three RBIs and she scored two runs. Lestician and McClellan finished game one with two hits each.

Pitcher Kinley Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) entered the game in the fourth inning and battled her way to another win. Over the final five and 1/3 innings, she struck out three, walked two and scattered seven hits.

Good's two hits pushed her season total to 67, which ties her for the fifth-most hits ever in a single-season. Her two runs scored moved her to 48 on the season, which ties Good for the third-most ever in a single-season.

Game 2 Recap: Shippensburg 8 – Lock Haven 1

Despite the loss in game two, Bella Schmitt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) turned in a sensational effort at the plate. She was 3-for-3 with a run scored. She had a triple and Rianna Trexler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) added a double. Peters drove in Lock Haven's run in the sixth on a single to center.

Shippensburg scored its eight runs on 13 hits.
