Volleyball outlasts Virginia Union, splits on final day of WVWC Tournament

The Bald Eagles wrapped up day two of the WVWC Tournament in West Virginia on Saturday

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Lock Haven (1-5) volleyball team took down Virginia Union in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (17-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9), on day two of the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 13. The Bald Eagles fell to the host, 3-0 (22-25, 24-26, 15-25), in their final match of the day.

Maddie Mitchell and Olivia Taylor were named to the All-Tournament Team after a breakthrough weekend. 
 
Virginia Union Recap: (3-2) (17-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9)
Lock Haven stormed past Virginia Union in a five-set thriller, 3-2, to collect its first win of the season.
 
The Bald Eagles rallied behind the stellar play of outside hitter Mitchell, who hammered home a season-high 19 kills
 
Middle blocker Gracelynn Wolzen added 10 kills and contributed 11 points. 
 
Avery Smith notched nine kills at a .350 clip and led the team with six blocks, helping stall Virginia Union attacks at the net.
 
Setter Madelyn Wagner orchestrated the offense with 30 assists, while also recording 14 digs, joining libero Taylor atop the digs leaderboard with 19.
 
Sophomore Avery Nicholson sparked the service game with a match-high five aces and added 11 digs.
 
West Virginia Wesleyan Recap: 0-3 (22-25, 24-26, 15-25)
West Virginia Wesleyan won all three sets to earn the match victory in final contest of the afternoon.
 
For Lock Haven, Wolzen and Mitchell each finished with a team-high 12 kills. Wolzen led the Bald Eagles' in scoring with 13.5 points.
 
Mitchell added 11 diggs, while Taylor finished with a team-high 12.
 
Wagner once again finished as the team-leader in assists with 31.
 
Next Up
The Bald Eagles return to Lock Haven for the first time this season next weekend and will welcome Glenville State, Edinboro and Goldey-Beacom to Thomas Fieldhouse for the Bald Eagle Classic on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19-20.
