Lock Haven's last time out:
LHU was edged by Millersville University (1-1, 0-0 PSAC East) 35-21 today on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
Despite the loss, there were a number of positives for the Bald Eagles.
Lock Haven held the advantage in first downs, 20-16 and out rushed the Marauders 127-120, but the Bald Eagles just couldn't find the end zone down the stretch.
The total offensive yards were just about even, but Lock Haven would be hurt on the day by 13 penalties that cost LHU 107 yards.
Millersville went up 13-0 early, but with 4:24 left in the opening frame, Jeremiah Dunchack (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) scored on a 15-yard run to make it 13-7. Dunchack's 15-yard dash capped off a 10-play, 66 yard drive.
With just 23 seconds left in the first half, Jarryd Burkett (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) hooked up with Jay Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) of a touchdown. Burkett's 14-yard TD pass to Hartman made it 20-14 in favor of MU. The touchdown capped off an impressive late drive of seven plays for 75 yards.
The first half ended with LHU down 20-14.
Millersville led the way in the third quarter, shutting out LHU 8-0.
With 9:09 left in the contest, LHU was still looking to make a game of it. Freshman Robert Meade (Edison NJ./Bishop AHR), who made the first start of his career at quarterback hit Jesse Hoover (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville) on a 31-yard pass for the score. The TD capped off a nine-play, 57 yard drive.
Hoover's touchdown made it a one possession game with Millersville up 28-21.
With 7:03 left, Millersville tacked on another touchdown to round out the scoring.
Meade was impressive in his debut and rushed for a team-best 57 yards. Dunchack finished with 32 yards on nine carries.
Burkett, who saw a number of snaps under center was 11-for-14 passing for 141 yards and one touchdown.
Hartman led the way with 69 receiving yards.
Ryan Good (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) led LHU with eight tackles and Raymond Mosby (Easton, Pa./Wilson) added seven.
Wes Plummer (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) and Nick Gounaris (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) each made six stops.
Kutztown's last time out:
Kutztown took down Mercyhurst 35-14, thanks in large part to Kevin Morton, who threw for a career high 364 yards.
Josh Smith caught three TD passes and Kendell Coleman scored twice for the Golden Bears.
D-FENCE is the game for The Haven:
Through two games, The Haven's defense has been tough and is ranked No. 3 in the PSAC in rush defense, while only allowing 83.5 yards per game.
Leading the way for LHU is senior Wes Plummer (Altoona, Pa./Altoona), who has a team-high 15 tackles on the year. Eight of his 15 stops have been solo stops.
Gounaris leads the defense:
Senior Nick Gounaris (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury), the Bald Eagles lone captain on this year's squad, is the leader for LHU on the defensive side of the ball.
Last year he earned a spot on the PSAC West Second Team Defense, nabbing a spot on the defensive line. Gounaris finished with 47 total tackles, which was fifth-best on the team. Gounaris made 25 solo stops and six tackles for a loss, which ranked as second-best on the team in 2009. He also added two sacks.
Two of Gounaris's best performances came against PSAC West opponents, as he racked up a game-high 11 and eight tackles against Clarion and Edinboro, respectively.
Gibble returns:
A huge key for Lock Haven is the return of senior Ryan Gibble (Millville, Pa./Central Columbia) to the O-line. Gibble a two-time All-PSAC selection yet missed the majority of last year with an injury.
