Bald Eagles set for PSAC West clash with #4 Cal (Pa.)

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
The Lock Haven University football team is set to travel to No. 4 California (Pa.) University. 

The Game:

Kickoff on Saturday (Oct. 2) at Adamson Stadium (6,500) is set for 1 p.m. The Bald Eagles will look to rebound back from a tough 41-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West opener at Mercyhurst.

Fourth-ranked California is 4-0 and 1-0 in PSAC West action.

The game marks the second home game of the year for the Vulcans.

Lock Haven is 0-4 overall and 0-1 in division action is 0-3 on the road.

The Series:

The Vulcans leads the all-time series which dates back to 1926 (Cal won 28-0) 37-26-1.

Cal has won six straight and eight of the last 10 meetings.

Last year in Lock Haven, Cal won 48-14.

Bald Eagles at a glance:

Lock Haven is back on the road and 0-4 on the year.

The Haven will look to snap a 25-game losing skid as the Bald Eagles haven't had a winning season since 1981.

The Bald Eagles offense was stagnate last week as they were unable to put any points on the board in a 41-0 loss to Mercyhurst.

The Lock Haven defense held their own in the first half holding the Lakers to just seven points. Mercyhurst came out with their halftime adjustments and put up 28 points in the third quarter. The Lakers added six more in the fourth quarter to win their homecoming game 41-0.

The Haven's last win came in the 2007 season finale, where LHU outlasted Clarion 17-14 on an overtime field goal.

Two weeks ago the Bald Eagles played Kutztown and was in the game going into the locker room at the half but once again Lock Haven struggled in the second half and loss the Golden Bears 38-13.



In week two, LHU fell to Millersville 35-21 in their second of two road games to start the new season.

In their season-opener at VMI, Bald Eagles fell to the Keydets 48-6 in front of 6,865 fans.

Lock Haven and VMI had met just once prior to this game. In the 2007 season-opener the Bald Eagles lost to their Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent 20-0.

California at a glance:

The Vulcans are hosting the Bald Eagles and are 4-0 with a third of the season in the books. The game marks California's second at home this season.

In the season-opener, the Vulcans pulled out an overtime win against Saginaw Valley 42-41. Cal. added two other non-divisional wins against C.W. Post (40-13) and East Stroudsburg (45-20).

Last weekend, California downed Clarion 24-9 on the road in their PSAC West opener.

Cal. comes in with a powerhouse offense ranking second in the PSAC averaging 37.8 ppg. The offense is also ranked #1 in total offense averaging 421 ypg. The offense is very balanced making it tough for opposing defenses to adjust with and average on 216.5 yards on the ground and 204.5 yards through the air.

The Vulcans are tied for the No. 1 rank in the PSAC in turnover margin with +10. Leading the way is Shawn Anderson, who is tied for the lead in the league with four interceptions.

Cal. is able to keep their offense on the field averaging 22.0 first downs per game.

Lock Haven's last time out:

The Lock Haven University football team (0-4, 0-1 PSAC West) dropped its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West opener 41-0 today on the road at Mercyhurst College (3-1, 1-0 PSAC West).

Neither team scored in the opening quarter and MC led 7-0 at halftime, but the Lakes scored 28 points in the third quarter to pull away.

With the win, Mercyhurst improves to 3-0 all-time vs. the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven struggled on the offensive side of the ball today and was outgained by MC 397-120.

Jesse Hoover (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville) led the way for LHU with five catches for 81 yards.

Defensively, Lock Haven got a tremendous individual effort from Kenny Monroe (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport). He made a team nine tackles including six solo stops. He also forced and recovered a fumble.

Zachary Hay (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) made five tackles for LHU.

Gounaris leads the defense:

Senior Nick Gounaris (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury), the Bald Eagles lone captain on this year's squad, is the leader for LHU on the defensive side of the ball.

Last year he earned a spot on the PSAC West Second Team Defense, nabbing a spot on the defensive line. Gounaris finished with 47 total tackles, which was fifth-best on the team. Gounaris made 25 solo stops and six tackles for a loss, which ranked as second-best on the team in 2009. He also added two sacks.

Two of Gounaris's best performances came against PSAC West opponents, as he racked up a game-high 11 and eight tackles against Clarion and Edinboro, respectively.

So far this season, he's made 13 stops.

Gibble returns:

A huge key for Lock Haven is the return of senior Ryan Gibble (Millville, Pa./Central Columbia) to the O-line. Gibble a two-time All-PSAC selection yet missed the majority of last year with an injury.

Last time vs. Cal (10/10/09)

The Lock Haven University football team (0-6, 0-4 PSAC West) fell to perennial power California (Pa.) University (5-2, 4-0 PSAC West) 48-14 tonight at Hubert Jack Stadium in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

Cal opened up a 17-0 lead after the opening quarter and led 31-0 at halftime.

The Bald Eagles tacked on touchdowns in third and fourth quarters.

With 6:13 left in the third quarter Ian Smith (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) scored on a one-yard TD run. Smith's first career touchdown capped off an 11-play, 68-yard drive that took 5:09.

Smith's touchdown made it 38-7 in favor of the Vulcans.

With 13:55 left in the fourth quarter Devin Sims (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jarryd Burkett (Altoona, Pa./Altoona). Sims second TD reception of the year capped off an eight-play, 68-yard drive.

Jarret Kratzer (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) got the start under center and was 10-for-13 for 46 yards.

Burkett came in and went 10-for-14 with the one TD. He passed for 110 total yards.

Ryan Poorman (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) led Lock Haven with five receptions.

Defensively, Lock Haven was led by Luke Ellison (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) and Shane Barrie (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional), who each had a game-high seven tackles.

Six of Ellison's seven stops were solo efforts and he added one tackle for a loss.

Barie had four solo tackles.

Seven different players made five or more tackles for LHU.

Cal quarterback Josh Portis went 17-for-23 passing for 274 yards and four TDs to lead the Vulcans to victory.

Cal has won five straight games after starting the year 0-2.

Lock Haven returns home to take on Clarion University on Saturday (Oct. 9) night at 7 p.m.
