FARMVILLE, Va. – Despite fierce winds and heavy rain caused by Hurricane Irene moving up the East Coast, the Lock Haven University field hockey team rallied from three goals down, but fell to Radford 4-3 on a last second goal in the Lady Eagles 2011 season opener.
With just 1:29 left in the match,
Kristi Shepps (Willow Street, Pa./Penn Manor) scored for The Haven to make it 3-3, but Radford scored the game-winner with four seconds left in regulation of the rain-soaked thriller.
Playing at Longwood University, Radford took a 1-0 lead just 3:46 into the contest.
Less than 19 minutes in, it was 3-0 in favor of the Highlanders, but Lock Haven wouldn't go away without a fight.
The Lady Eagles rallied to score the next three goals.
Kelly Harsh (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) put LHU on the board late in the first half.
Midway through the second half,
Leslie Ahern (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) scored on a breakaway to make it 3-2.
Shepps knotted the game with 1:29 to go, but Lock Haven's rally was overshadowed by Radford's last second heroics.

Lindsay Staufenberg (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) made seven saves for LHU.
With the win, Radford moves to 2-0 on the season, while LHU starts 0-1.
LHU is back in action tomorrow (Sunday, August 28) at 1 p.m. when the Lady Eagles take on Longwood.
