Setting the stage:
Lock Haven enters Week 9 and heads to ESU looking for its second straight road win. Last Saturday at Millersville, the Bald Eagles snapped a 30-game road-losing streak, beating the Maruaders 26-14. It was the first road win for LHU since the 2007 season-finale at Claroin.

Sparking the win was solid play from redshirt-freshman quarterback Caleb Walton, who threw for 181 yards, three touchdowns and no picks in his second straight start. Lock Haven's defense was also fantastic again.

LHU and ESU enter Week 9 with identical 2-3 PSAC marks.

Lock Haven will look to slow down Warrior QB Matt Soltes, who is third in the PSAC with 295.5 passing yards per game. He's thrown 24 TD passes and just three interceptions. His No. 1 target Robert Bleiler has eight touchdowns and is recording 100.5 yards per game.

The Warriors are coming off a 43-26 win at Kutztown. The win snapped a two-game losing skid for ESU.

The series:
Following last year's 31-0 shutout-victory, the all-time series is tied at 8-8.

Last year at ESU, the Warriors scored on their first four possessions and jumped out a 24-0 halftime lead.

Brandon Brader rushed for 84 yards, while Eddie Celkos and Jesse Hoover combined for five catches in the loss.

Another streak snapped:
Lock Haven continues to end the streaks it doesn't want to be associated with. With their win over Cheyney in the 2012 season-finale, the Bald Eagles snapped a 52-game losing streak. Since that win, LHU has won three more games, including last week's showdown on the road a Millersville. It was the first win for LHU on the road in 31 tries and the first road win since the 2007 season-finale at Clarion.

D-FENCE:
Lock Haven's defense has been a huge reason behind their success all year and last weekend at Millersville was no different. LHU picked off each of Millersville's three quarterbacks and a pair of late first-half turnovers sparked LHU's 13-point second quarter rally. Five different players recorded five tackles in the win and Marc Olivo had two of LHU's three interceptions. Lock Haven recorded five sacks and nine tackles for a loss. LHU is currently ranked second in the PSAC, only allowing 179.9 passing yards per game.

Brader nearing the top:
Brandon Brader's 2,373 career rushing are the fourth-most in Bald Eagle history. Brader is behind only Joe Speese (#1 - 3,399), Mike Kresovich (#2 - 2,865) and Maurice Walker (#3 - 2,800).

Kicking into the record books:
Sophomore Alex Boumerhi kicked his way into the LHU record books last weekend. His 48-yard field goal was the longest in Lock Haven history. The Bald Eagles had several 47-yarders on record. On the year, he's 8-of-12. Earlier in the season his 46-yarder vs. Cheyney was the longest for a Lock Haven kicker since Dan Hagerman's 43-yard field goal vs. Cheyney in 2005.

Herko's Iron Man streak:
Last Saturday, vs. Millersville offensive guard Anthony Herko made his 31st career start. Herko is a two-time All-PSAC West selection.

LHU in the PSAC rankings:
  • Pass defense (passing yards allowed) – second, 179.9 yards/game
  • Rushing yards per game – Brandon Brader, 13th (67.4 yards/game)
  • Tackles per game – George Christas, 12th (7.9)
  • Tackles per game – Tony Ballon, 16th (7.8)
  • Sacks – Tyrek Morgan, 4th (6)
  • Kicking – Alex Boumerhi, 48-yard field goal (2nd longest this year)
  • Kicking – Alex Boumerhi, 8-of-12 (66.7), 3rd

LHU in the NCAA rankings:

  • Pass efficiency defense – 37th (115.4)
  • Interceptions – 15th (13 INTs)
  • Turnover margin – 43rd
  • Interceptions – George Christas, 4 (T-19)

Leading at halftime:
Last Saturday, marked Lock Haven's first halftime lead of the season. Even in the Bald Eagles previous two wins, LHU trailed after 30 minutes. In Week 1, LHU trailed West Virginia State 6-3 and in Week 3, LHU trailed Cheyney 10-7.

PSAC East:
For the first time in school history, Lock Haven will play football as part of the PSAC's Eastern Division in 2013. LHU made the move to the East with the July addition of Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown. The PSAC is the largest football playing conference in the NCAA. The Week 3 win over Cheyney was Lock Haven's first-ever PSAC East game and the Bald Eagles first-ever PSAC East win. The Week 4 game at Bloomsburg was Lock Haven's first-ever PSAC East road game. Millersville marked LHU's first-ever PSAC East road win.

Crossover action:
The Week 5 PSAC Crossover game at Edinboro was the second of three games this year vs. PSAC West opponents. LHU lost to Clarion on the road in Week 2 (L, 30-13). Lock Haven is scheduled to host Gannon in Week 11 (Saturday, Nov. 16 | 1 p.m.). The last time LHU beat a PSAC West opponent was when they beat Clarion in the 2007 season-finale. Then a divisional-win, it was Lock Haven's last win prior to the Bald Eagles snapping the losing streak in the final game of last season.

Winning ways:
When LHU won its season-opener at home vs. West Virginia State (Sept. 7) 31-13, it marked back-to-back wins for The Haven. LHU hadn't won two straight since back-to-back wins over Cheyney and Mansfield in 2002. Prior to the win over Cheyney last year, Lock Haven's last win was the 2007 season-finale at Clarion. The 2012 season-ending win snapped a 52 game losing skid. The Haven's last winning season was 1981.

Moving in the right direction:
Already with three wins on the year and nowhere else to go, but up, the Bald Eagles continue to move forward under third-year head coach John Allen. Lock Haven hadn't recorded two wins in year since 2006. In '06, LHU beat Mansfield and Cheyney. The 2004 season was the last time LHU recorded three wins in a season. Now the Bald Eagles are 3-5 with three games remaining. Allen is now 4-25 as head coach.

With heavy hearts:
When the Bald Eagles take the field this season, it will be with heavy hearts. On Saturday, March 23 senior Skyler Wool died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Wool, a Jersey Shore, Pa. native was a 2012 Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 Team member, a two-time All-PSAC selection and a two-time Gene Upshaw Division II Linemen of the Year award nominee.  The Bald Eagles will wear a commemorative decal with Wool's jersey number (92) on the back of their helmets during the 2013 season in honor of their former teammate and captain.
