Lock Haven hosts Cheyney is first-ever PSAC East football game

The Bald Eagles are set to host Cheyney on Saturday (Sept. 21) night at 6 p.m. in the Bald Eagles first-ever PSAC East contest.

Setting the stage:
The Bald Eagles are looking to rebound after their first loss of the 2013 season last Saturday at Clarion. Lock Haven lost to Clarion, 30-13. The Haven was bidding for its first 2-0 start since 1982.
 
LHU (1-1) welcomes winless Cheyney (0-2) in the PSAC East opener for both teams. Cheyney lost to No. 8 IUP, 49-0 last week and has lost 12 straight games dating back to last season.
 
Saturday marks the second of sixth home games in 2013 for Lock Haven, the most since the Bald Eagles played six times at home in 2008. LHU has won its last two games at home.
 
The series:
Saturday marks the 17th meeting all-time vs. LHU and Cheyney in a series that dates back to 1953. The two teams will now meeting annually in a PSAC East Divisional game.
 
LHU has won 15 of 16 meetings.
 
Lock Haven beat Cheyney in the 2012 season finale, snapping a 52-game losing streak, which was the nation's longest losing streak regardless of NCAA affiliation.
 
Last year's game marked the first meeting between the Bald Eagles and Cheyney since 2007.
 
LHU 1st & 10:
1. Saturday is Lock Haven's first-ever PSAC East game. It is the PSAC East opener for both teams. 2013 marks the first time in school history that Lock Haven will play football as part of the Eastern Division.
 
2. Despite the loss at Clarion, RB Brandon Brader rushed for over 100 yards for the seventh time in his career. It also marked his second straight two-TD game and the third two-TD game of his career.
 
3. With his 121 yards last weekend, Brader passed the 2,000 yard mark for his career and moved to No. 6 all-time on Lock Haven's career rushing list.
 
4. QB Dillon Mazzoni made his second straight start (2nd career start) and passed for over 140 yards and at least one TD for the second straight game.
 
5. Tony Ballon led LHU in tackles at Clarion with a team-high 10.
 
6. LHU is in search of its first two-win season since 2006. LHU was 2-9 in 2006.
 
7. On the season, the Bald Eagles remain a perfect 4-for-4 on offense in the Red Zone.
 
8. On the season, the Bald Eagles are just 4-for-26 on third-down conversions, but are 2-for-3 when going for it on fourth down.
 
9. On six kick returns this year, Beau Swales is averaging 18.5 yards per return.
 
10. LHU is averaging 111 rush yards per game and 344 yards per game in the air. Opponents are averaging 222.5 on the ground and 282 through the air.

PSAC East:
For the first time in school history, Lock Haven will play football as part of the PSAC's Eastern Division in 2013. Saturday marks LHU's first official game in the East. LHU made the move to the East with the July addition of Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown. The PSAC is the largest football playing conference in the NCAA.
 
Winning ways:
When LHU won its season-opener at home vs. West Virginia State (Sept. 7) 31-13, it marked back-to-back wins for The Haven. LHU hadn't won two straight since back-to-back wins over Cheyney and Mansfield in 2002. Prior to the win over Cheyney last year, Lock Haven's last win was the 2007 season-finale at Clarion. LHU won 17-14 in OT. The Haven's last winning season was 1981.
 
Brader in the record books:
Brandon Brader is the just the sixth Bald Eagle in school history to surpass the 2,000 yard mark for his year. His 2,014 career-rushing yards are the sixth best ever. He's just 54 yards away from No. 5 all-time (Charles Lucas – 2,068 – 1975-98) and 76 yards away from No. 4 all-time (Chris Klinger – 2,090 – 1963-65).
 
Red Zone:
LHU is getting it done in the red zone. Lock Haven is a perfect 4-for-4 on the offense in the red zone after going 3-for-3 in the opener vs. West Virginia State. LHU has three red zone TDs. On defense, LHU has been scored on 6-of-8 times when opponents reach the red zone, but the Bald Eagles have limited that to just three touchdowns.
 
Mazzoni under center:
QB Dillon Mazzoni has now made two straight starts and in both games he's passed for at least 140 yards and one TD. On the season he's 21-of-41 with three TDs and one interception.
 
Hoover the main target:
WR Jesse Hoover has been Mazzoni's made target He has a team-high 13 catches for a team-high 152 receiving yards. Hoover is one of three players to haul in a TD pass this year. He has 10 career touchdowns.
 
D-FENCE:
Lock Haven's defense has been solid in the first two games. The Bald Eagles are holding opponents to just a 38 percent conversion rate on third down. LHU has 10 TFLs, five sacks, one INT, eight pass breakups and three forced fumbles.
 
Ballon & Christas 1-2 in stops:
LB Tony Ballon leads LHU in tackles with 21 (13 solo) and S George Christas is second with 16 tackles (12 solo). Christas also has three pass breakups and led LHU with four interceptions last year.
 
Herko's streak:
Senior offensive guard Anthony Herko, a two-time All-PSAC selection has now made 26 consecutive starts, including every game of the last two seasons.
 
Last time out:
Last Saturday (Sept. 14), LHU lost its first road game of the year at former PSAC West rival Clarion. It marked Clarion's sixth straight win over Lock Haven.
 
Brandon Brader's two TD game wasn't enough to help LHU pull off the road win. He rushed for 121 yards and a TD on 20 carries. Brader also caught a 14-yard TD pass from Dillon Mazzoni with 35 seconds left in the first half to put LHU on the board. The touchdown made it 17-6 Clarion at the break.
 
After a scoreless first quarter, Clarion scored 17 point in the second half and the Golden Eagles tacked on six in the third quarter to pave the way for the victory.
 
LHU didn't go away however and Brader's 45-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter cut the lead to just 23-13.
 
Bobby Thomas's 37-yard touchdown run with just under nine minutes to play helped Clarion hold off the LHU rally.
 
Mazzoni was 12-of-23 passing for 149 yards in his second career start. He passed for one TD and had one interception. Jesse Hoover made a game-high seven catches for 79 yards.
 
Tony Ballon had another big night for LHU on defense and finished with a team-high 10 tackles. Matt Kirchner was also solid with nine tackles, including one sack.
 
Scouting the Wolves:
Cheyney is losers of 12 straight games and the Wolves are 0-2 this year. Last weekend, CU lost to No. 8 IUP, 49-0 on the road. CU lost to Lincoln, 33-28 in Week 1.
 
Leading the offense for the Wolves is Marcus Jones and Nahum Purdie. Each averages over 40 yards-per-game on the ground has rushed for two TDs. Cheyney has no passing TDs and three different QBs have played this year.
 
LB Isaiah Fleming leads the defense with 19 (14 solo) tackles through two games.
 
Last time vs. Cheyney (11/10/2012):
LHU snapped the nation's longest losing streak and capped off the 2012 season with a thrilling 15-7 win over visiting Cheyney. Lock Haven (1-10) picked up its first win in exactly five years, snapping a 52-game losing streak.
 
The Haven's last win came in the 2007 season finale (Nov. 10, 2007) at Clarion, 17-14 (OT).
Lock Haven led 12-7 with 4:43 left in the game when senior Noah Heimer hit a 23-yard field goal, which gave Lock Haven the insurance they needed. Heimer's field goal made it 15-7 Lock Haven.
 
Following Heimer's field goal, the defense, much like it had done all day long, came up huge and forced a Cheyney (1-10) punt.
 
Facing fourth-and-one with just over two minutes to play, senior quarterback Jarrett Kratzer got the first down LHU needed and the Bald Eagles went to victory formation for the first time in 52 games, much to the delight of the home faithful.
 
The Bald Eagles defense came into its own over the last four weeks of the season and today was no different. Lock Haven forced five fumbles and a safety. The Haven defense was led by Matt Kirchner and Ryan Good, who both made seven tackles. Kircher forced two of Lock Haven's five forced-fumbles and recovered one.
 
Lock Haven went up early after the Bald Eagles went up 2-0 just 7:57 into the game on a safety. With 10:45 left in the first half, true-freshman Alex Boumerhi hit a 37-yard field goal to make it 5-0.
 
Lock Haven made it 12-0 with 14:23 to play after rookie Beau Swales scored his first career TD. His two-yard run capped off a six-play, 21-yard drive.
 
Cheyney wasn't about to fold however, and just 4:29 after Swales' TD, the Wolves found the end zone and made it 12-7.
 
Heimer's field goal with 5:03 left helped ice the win.
 
Kratzer, who made his 24th career start at QB, finished the game 10-for-19 passing for 127 yards. Brandon Brader recorded his first 100-yard rushing game of the season, leading LHU to the win. Brader had 110 yards on 23 carries.
 
Prior to the game, the Bald Eagles honored their 13-member senior class. The senior class honored the home faithful with the first win of their career as the Bald Eagle fans rushed the field in celebration.
 
West Virginia State game notes:
LHU beat West Virginia State 31-13 in the season-opener on Sept. 7.
- It marked the first time LHU won a season-opener since 2005 when they beat Cheyney on the road 17-16 on August 27, 2005.
- The last time LHU won a season-opener at home was August 28, 2004 vs. Cheyney (W, 35-19).
- On October 2, 2004 was the last time Lock Haven scored 31 or more points. LHU beat Mansfield, 33-30.
- The last time LHU scored 28 points in a quarter was September 25, 1999 when Lock Haven posted a 28-point second quarter vs. Cheyney. LHU won 53-26.
 
2013 Captains:
Lock Haven's 2013 Fred Caro Team Captains are senior defensive tackle Kyle White, senior running back Brandon Brader, senior wide receiver Jesse Hoover and junior defensive back George Christas. Fred Caro, a 1958 Lock Haven graduate was captain of the 1957 Bald Eagle football team that went undefeated (8-0) and won the PSAC Championship. Caro also wrestled and competed on the track & field team at Lock Haven. He was part of Lock Haven's inaugural football Hall of Fame class in 2010.
 
With heavy hearts:
When the Bald Eagles take the field this season, it will be with heavy hearts. On Saturday, March 23 senior Skyler Wool died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Wool, a Jersey Shore, Pa. native was a 2012 Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 Team member, a two-time All-PSAC selection and a two-time Gene Upshaw Division II Linemen of the Year award nominee.  The Bald Eagles will wear a commemorative decal with Wool's jersey number (92) on the back of their helmets during the 2013 season in honor of their former teammate and captain.

The Bald Eagles travel to No. 13 Bloomsburg next Saturday, September 28 for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
