Field Hockey falls to UMass, 2-0 in A-10 Semifinals

Lock Haven falls to Massachusetts, 2-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) Tournament Semifinals


*UPDATE: Sunday, November 8 - Following Saturday's A-10 title game, the All-Championship Team was annouced and LHU goalkeeper Elaina White was named to the team. 

RICHMOND, Va. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (12-8) was downed 2-0 by Massachusetts (11-9) today in a 2014 Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) Tournament Semifinal match.
 
UMass will meet host-Richmond in tomorrow's A-10 Championship match. Earlier today, Richmond beat Saint Francis, 5-0.
 
With about 12 minutes to play in the first half, the game broke open a bit.
 
The Lady Eagles were awarded a corner and with 11:52 left in the opening half and Taylor Kennedy (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Township) drilled a shot toward goal, but it was blocked by a diving UMass defender.
 
With just under 10 minutes to play in first half, Haven goalkeeper Elaina White (Etters, Pa./Red Land) made a sensational sprawling save on Massachusetts' fourth penalty corner of the opening half.
 
On the ensuing penalty corner, UMass got the board. Melanie Kreusch's 10th goal of the season put Massachusetts up 1-0. The goal came in the 27th minute and UMass led 1-0 at halftime.
 
With 15 minutes to play in the game, Nakira Downes (Bridgetown, Barbados/The Combermere School) had a prime chance to tie the game, but her shot far-post was saved by UMass' Sam Carlino, who made a lunging kick save. The scoring chance came off Lock Haven's second penalty corner of the second half.
 
UMass went up 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Brooke Sabia deflected home a Melanie Kreusch shot off a penalty corner. It was Sabia's sixth goal of the season.
 
Lydia George (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) played a strong game for Lock Haven.
 
Stephanie Whiteman (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anstey East) led Lock Haven's defensive effort.
 
White was sensational in goal for Lock Haven and kept the Lady Eagles in the game. She finished with nine saves, including six spectacular stops in the second half.
 
Downes registered two of Lock Haven's three shots today.
 
Today's semifinal marked Lock Haven's second consecutive A-10 Tournament appearance and third overall. The Lady Eagles were playing as the No. 4 seed after finishing the regular season 6-2 in conference play.
 
Yesterday (Thursday), the A-10 announced its 2014 All-Conference teams and six Lady Eagles were honored.
 
Nakira Downes was named a 2014 First Team Selection. Megan Wenrich (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) earned Second Team honors and freshman Devyn Barry (Middletown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) was named to the All-Rookie Team. George, White and Jenna Felice (Endicott, N.Y./Maine Endwell) were all named to the All-Academic Team.
