JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The No. 4 seed Lock Haven University volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-20 & 25-14) tonight at top-seed Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal action at The Sports Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
With the win, Pitt Johnstown improves to 29-5 on the season, while Lock Haven moves to 21-13 on the year.
Leading the way offensively for Lock Haven was
Megan Flick (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle) and
Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll), who combined for 17 of LHU's 33 kills on the night.
Flick knocked down a team-high 10 kills, while Gomish added seven.
Jessica Brown (Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard-Dale) dished out 23 assists and
Sydney Belcastro (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) registered 20 digs.
Sparked by a large and loud home crowd, the Mountain Cats got off to a fast start and led 11-4 early in the match. UPJ stretched the lead to 19-9, but Lock Haven came alive late in the first set and rallied, but Pitt-Johnstown held on for the 25-15 win.
In set two, the two teams locked up in a battle with neither able to break away until late. Leading 16-15 late, UPJ slowly pulled away to the, 25-20 win and 2-0 match lead. LHU hit .316 as a team in set two.
Leading 2-0 in the match, UPJ opened the third set on a 7-0 run, pushing the Mountain Cats to a 25-14 win.
The two teams split the season series with the home team winning on both occasions. Most recently - just two weeks ago (November 3), LHU beat UPJ 3-2 after trailing 2-0.
With tonight's win, Pitt Johnstown advances to, and will host the PSAC semifinals on Friday.
Lock Haven, ranked No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings, entered tonight's contest, winners' of seven of its last 10 matches.
The Bald Eagles now await next Monday's (November 23) NCAA Division II Selection Show to see if they will earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
