Takes 2 OT’s for Bloomsburg to slip by Bald Eagles

LHU quarterback Caleb Walton’s record-setting day sparked the Bald Eagles, but their bid for an upset at perennial-power Bloomsburg fell short in a double-OT thriller, 31-28.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University football team (2-8, 2-5 PSAC East) got another sensational performance from quarterback Caleb Walton (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and the Bald Eagles pushed perennial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East power Bloomsburg University (6-4, 5-2 PSAC East) to the brink, but in the end, the Huskies won the double-overtime thriller, 31-28.

Walton threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns. He completed 24 of 43 passes.

Entering the game, Walton needed just one TD pass to break the all-time single-season record for touchdown passes. He now has 21 on the season.

Today marked Walton's 14th career game with 200-plus passing yards and his third career game over 300. His 312 passing yards today also push him over 2,000 for the second the consecutive season and surpass his career-mark of 2,164 set last season. Walton's 2,219 yards are the fourth-most in school history for a single season.

Walton threw TD-passes to three different players including Shawn Seif (Harrisburg, Pa./Kutztown University), Del'Vaughn Dennis (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) and Dan Krupko (Homeworth, Ohio/Urbana University).

Seif finished with 11 catches for 158 yards, while Dennis racked up 135 yards on nine receptions.

Malyk Harris (Harrisburg, Pa./Albright College) rushed for 63 yards on 23 carries.

Strong play from the Bald Eagle defense helped keep The Haven in the game as well. Leading the way was linebacker Tony Ballon (Jersey City, N.J./Harrisburg) and defensive back Daniel Strawbridge (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg), who finished with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. Ballon's 11 (4 solo, 7 ast., 1 TFL) were a game-high.

LHU kicker Alex Boumerhi (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) was 3-of-4 on field goal attempts, including a 22-yarder in double-OT.

The Bald Eagles marched right down the field on the opening drive and a one-yard - - Walton to Krupko TD-pass - - capped the eight-play, 71-yard drive.

Bloomsburg led LHU 14-10 at the break, but the Bald Eagles regained the lead midway through the third quarter after Walton threw a TD-pass to Seif. Seif's touchdown reception made it 19-14 with 8:28 left in the third.

Trailing 22-19 in the fourth, and facing a third-and-goal from the Bloomsburg 18-yard line, Walton threw a dart to Dennis and put Lock Haven back on top at 25-22 (PAT failed).

With 2:18 left in the game, Huskies' kicker Tyler Smith connected on a 24-yard field goal, which set up overtime.

Neither team scored on its first OT-possession, but LHU took the lead in double-OT, thanks to a Boumerhi field goal from 22 yards.

Joe Parsnik's two-yard TD run on the next possession won it for Bloomsburg.

LHU was looking for its first win over the Huskies since 2003. Bloomsburg was the 2015 PSAC East preseason favorite the Huskies entered the season ranked as high as No. 11 in some national polls after advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals last season.

The Bald Eagles will close out the 2015 season next Saturday, November 14 vs. California (Pa.) University at home (1 p.m.)
