LHU officially unveils new Roger’s Gymnasium Weight Room

LHU Athletics holds ribbon cutting ceremony for The James L. Berkebile & LHU Student Auxiliary Service Inc. Athletics Weight Room

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – On Monday, March 30, the Lock Haven University Department of Athletics and the LHU Foundation held the ribbon cutting ceremony and officially unveiled the new James L. Berkebile & LHU Student Auxiliary Service Inc. Athletics Weight Room.

The weight room is in the lower level of Roger's Gymnasium. Roger's Gymnasium dates back to 1896, making it the oldest building currently on campus. The weight room opened in the late 1970's as a request from the then head football coach and faculty member Jack Fisher. All previous equipment dates back to the mid-1970's.

Up until recently many of the weights were donated from funds raised by Coach Fisher with help from a number of former student-athletes.

Over the last several weeks the weight room in the Roger's Gymnasium has undergone a major transformation and remodeling phase.

A number of current LHU student-athletes, coaches, administrators, staff and faculty, as well as alums, trustees and local community members joined LHU President Michael Fiorentino in thanking Mr. Berkebile and the LHU's Student Auxillary Services (SAS).

The new weight room will directly benefit all current and future LHU student-athletes, as well as the LHU ROTC program.

"The impact that the renovation will have on our current and future student-athletes will be invaluable," said LHU Director of Athletics Mark Sherburne. "I sincerely thank everyone who made this dream a reality."

Berkibile said to the student atheletes, "You need to work hard, set goals and I'm happy to be a part of the process for getting you there." Berkebile, a 1959 graduate of LHU, made special note of the impact the university made on him.

"A great weight room is one of the key components for a strong athletics program. This was an important project and we sincerely appreciate the stewardship of James Berkebile," said President Fiorentino.

"The LHU Student Auxiliary Services, Inc. is happy to support our students and the Roger's Weight Room remodeling project," said Jean Nestlerode, Director of the LHU SAS Board. "It is important for the LHU SAS, Inc. to support projects that provide the entire university community state of the art facilities, and the Roger's Weight Room renovation project provided us the opportunity to support student and university needs."
