Coach Taynor's Week 9 takeaways:
After the huge Week 9 win over Bloomsburg, second-year head coach
Dave Taynor had plenty to be excited about. Below are his three biggest takeaways after Week 9.
- DEFENSE – It was an all-around great day at the office for the defensive unit and I couldn't be more excited, said Taynor. We made plays, had three interceptions, three sacks and shut down Bloomsburg's run-game.
- FORD & O-Line – John Ford hand another huge game and it was the offensive line that paved the way, as the o-line completely controlled the line of scrimmage in a dominating effort.
- WALTON – Caleb Walton got the job done and set two school records. He broke the all-time TD passing record, thanks to a trick play and a pass to fellow QB
Cameron Tobias. He does it all for us and even kicked an extra point in the win.
Coach Dave Taynor is in his second season as the head coach at Lock Haven (5-15 at LHU, 42-55 career; updated Sunday, October 30 after win over Bloomsburg in Week 9).
Back to winnings ways:
Last weekend's (Week 9; Saturday, Oct. 29) win over Bloomsburg marked Lock Haven's third win in the last four games. The three wins this season are the most since LHU won three games and finished the 2013 season at 3-8 overall.
The three PSAC Divisional wins are the most since LHU won three in PSAC West action in 1981. The Bald Eagles haven't won more than three divisional games since 1979 when head coach Jack Fisher's squad ran the table in PSAC Western Division play and finished 6-0 (9-2 overall).
LHU moved to the PSAC East at the start of the 2013 season.
The Bald Eagles haven't won four games in a single season since 2002 when LHU finished 4-7 overall. That year, Lock Haven picked up wins over Kutztown, Mansfield, Cheyney and Shippensburg.
Big win for the program:
The win over Bloomsburg was a big one for LHU as it snapped a six-game losing streak to the Huskies and it marked LHU's first win over local-rival BU since 2003. Bloomsburg was picked third in the PSAC East preseason coaches' poll and just two seasons ago played in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals. The Bald Eagles completely dominated the Huskies in every facet of the game and hope the momentum carries over into the final two weeks of the season.
D-FENCE the story:
Once again, it was LHU's defensive unit that played the biggest part in the win over Bloomsburg. The Bald Eagles shut down the Huskie run game and stymied any hope of a passing game with three interceptions and three sacks.
Kevin Chapple led the way with nine tackles, including eight solo stops, two sacks and three total tackles for loss.
Rahjeir Miles-Eubanks and
Isaiah Flamer both recorded nine tackles apiece as well. Flamer and
Christian Martir recorded interceptions, as did
Javon Whitfield.
Ford runs tough:
Sophomore-transfer running back
John Ford assumed the role of top running back in Week 8 at Kutztown and has quickly established himself as one of the toughest backs in the PSAC East. At Kutztown he rushed for 121 yards and two TDs and he followed it up with a career-high 144 yards in the win over Bloomsburg. Ford's hard-nosed downhill running ability carried Lock Haven to the win over Bloomsburg. He carried the ball a career-high 35 times in the win over BU and scored one TD. Ford has at least one touchdown in the last three games and has averaged 132.5 yards over the last two games since earning the majority of snaps.
Seif a playmaker:
Wide receiver
Shawn Seif's special 2016 season continued in the win over Bloomsburg. His 48-yard catch-and-run TD electrified the home crowd and marked his sixth TD reception this year of over 25 yards. On the season, Seif now has 1,017 yards, becoming just the second 1,000-yard receiver in school history. He's just 64 yards away from breaking the single season record.
On the season (8GP/8GS; missed one game because of injury), Seif averages 127.1 yards/game, which is No. 1 in the PSAC and No. 4 in the NCAA (DII). His 1,017 yards are ninth in Division II and No. 1 in the PSAC.
Chapple leads the "D":
After three years at Urbana, R-Sr. LB
Kevin Chapple has made himself feel at home this season at Lock Haven. He opened his Bald Eagle career with a monster outing at Clarion in Week 1, finishing with 14 tackles. Chapple was a huge key in the win over Bloomsburg.
Chapple's 84 tackles are No. 3 in the PSAC (47
th NCAA DII) and his 9.3 tackles/game rank No. 4 in the PSAC (47
th NCAA DII).
Chapple ranks second among all active NCAA Division II players (42 career games) in total solo tackles for loss with 52. He is fifth among all active DII players with 1.51 total TFLs/game.
Walton does it all, breaks records:
Redshirt-senior QB
Caleb Walton continues to rewrite the LHU record books. In the win over Bloomsburg, Walton became the school's all-time leader in passing TDs with 62 and total touchdowns accounted for by any LHU player in history with 73.
Walton's 2,592 passing yards this season are the fourth-most ever in a single season and are just 285 away from moving into the No. 3 spot.
Walton has also been doing a lot of the punting this season (15 punts, 630 yards, avg. 42, 4 of 50+ yds.). On Saturday, he even kicked an extra point, as he's cemented himself as one of the all-time LHU greats.
