LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's soccer team (0-1, 0-1 PSAC) dominated much of the 90-minute match, but the Bald Eagles bid for an early-season upset came up just short as No. 9 East Stroudsburg University (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) used a second-half tally to down LHU, 1-0 in the 2016 opener for both teams.
The only goal of the match came in the 53
rd minute after ESU's Hannah Gombos sent a long free kick in toward the Lock Haven goal where the ball found the back of the net.
The two teams were deadlocked at 0-0 after the opening 45 minutes of action which were controlled by LHU throughout.
The Bald Eagles turned it on late too and did everything they could in the final 20 minute of the contest, but they just couldn't break through and tie the match.
LHU goalkeeper
Bree Hilty (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), a two-sport athlete, who also excels on the softball diamond made her women's soccer debut and finished with three saves.
LHU outshot ESU 8-6.
Haley Predix (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) had Lock Haven's best chance to tie the match, but her shot at the far post was saved by a diving ESU goalie Jules Harris late in the game.
LHU hits the road for a Saturday (September 3) match at Mercyhurst University (1 p.m.).
LHU head coach Kathy Brown made her Bald Eagle coaching debut today. The hard-fought 1-0 loss to nationally-ranked ESU spoiled the debut, but Lock Haven's play left fans inspired. Janelle Swartz is pictured in action today (photo courtesy of Wally Kocher).
