LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (29-14) downed visiting IUP (18-22) 5-4 today in a scheduled nine-inning game. The win pushed Lock Haven to 29-14 overall and 29 wins are the most in 16 seasons.
LHU also won 29 games in 2001 and 29 stands as the second most in school history for a single season. The school record for wins in a single season is 30 and the Bald Eagles will look to continue their historic run this coming weekend. The Bald Eagles have already locked up their first winning season since 2002.
Cayden Stover (Beech Creek, Pa./Chesapeake College) also made history today after he doubled down the left field line in the first inning. The double was his 18
th of the season, which is the most ever recorded by a Bald Eagle during a single season. The previous record was 17.
Stover's record-breaking double highlighted a three-run first inning for the Bald Eagles, who jumped on IUP early.
Leading 3-2, Lock Haven added a pair of runs in the sixth after
Brady Chappell (Milton, Pa./Milton) hit a two-run double. Chappell was 2 for 3 at the plate and
Kolby DeHaas (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Wenatchee Valley Community College) was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
LHU's pitching staff was solid as well and in all, four different pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
Lock Haven will close out the 2017 regular season this weekend with a four-game Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East series vs. No. 13 West Chester. The series - which holds major PSAC and NCAA regional postseason implications - opens Friday, May 5 at WCU (1/3 p.m.). The Bald Eagles will host the Golden Rams on Saturday, May 6 (1/3 p.m.). Saturday's home game marks LHU's Senior Day, Alumni Day and The Watkins Field dedication.
