LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University lacrosse team won four of its final five games in the regular season and secured a home playoff game, which was hugely important after going 9-0 at home during the regular season. The familiar surroundings once again paid off as the No. 22 Bald Eagles (13-5) used a strong second half and downed No. 25 Slippery Rock (13-5), 9-6 in the First Round of the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.
With the win, Lock Haven advances to the PSAC Semifinals. It will mark the 14
th semifinal appearance for LHU, who will take on top-seed and host West Chester. In other semifinal action, Mercyhurst topped Bloomsburg. The Lakers will take on No. 2 seed East Stroudsburg Friday (May 4) at West Chester.
Leading the way today for Lock Haven was
Katie Costanza (Denver, Pa./Cocalico), who had four goals and goalkeeper
Lauren Marte (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) who finished with 11 saves including nine in the second half.
Lock Haven, the No. 4 seed, and Slippery Rock, the No. 5 seed, were tied 4-4 at halftime after an evenly played opening half.
The start of the second half marked one of the game's biggest turning points as Costanza scored just 25 seconds in. With Lock Haven up 5-4, Marte made three huge point-blank saves on the defensive end. The strong play by Marte helped stall a Slippery Rock push.
Two straight SRU goals tied things again and it was 6-6 with 20:41 left in the game.
LHU closed the game with goals from Costanza,
Karli Gilbert (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown) and Costanza, and led 9-6 with 3:52 to left in the game.
Gilbert scored twice and
Ashley Gochenaur (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) netted two goals to go along with two assists.
Dana Laulis (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) had a goal and two assists, while
Hayley Kilian (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) dished out a pair of helpers.
With the win, the Bald Eagles finished 2018 10-0 at home.
Defensively,
Emily Gerhart (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) had five caused turnovers.
Lock Haven and West Chester's semifinal on Friday (May 4) at WCU is set for a 1 p.m. start.
