UMass slips past Lock Haven in 2OT-thriller

The LHU field hockey team was edged 4-3 by host-UMass in a double-overtime thriller.

AMHERST, Mass. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (4-3, 0-1 A-10) and host-Massachusetts (3-4, 1-0 A-10) opened Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) play today in thrilling fashion, as the back-and-forth battle needed overtime, but it the end it was the UMass, who came away with the win, edging LHU, 4-3 in double-overtime.

The two teams were deadlocked at 3-3 at the end of regulation, but UMass found the game-winner just 3:57 into double-overtime on a goal from Lucy Cooper.

Taryn Piano (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg), Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anesty East) and Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain) all scored for LHU, and goalkeeper Brianna DeAngelis (Doylestown, Pa./Monmouth) finished with seven saves.

UMass opened the scoring just 8:49 into the game, but Lock Haven was quick to respond and Piano knocked home pass from Roach. Piano's goal tied the game at 1-1 in the 14th minute.

Early in the second half, Massachusetts made it 2-1 (45'), but again LHU had a response and tied the game at 2-2 in the 49th minute on Brathwaite's goal.

The hosts took their third lead and made it 3-2 on a goal by Cooper in the 67th minute.

Again, Lock Haven responded, this time in dramatic fashion as Roach tied the game with just 1:01 left in the contest. Roach ripped home a MacKenzie Farley (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) pass off the penalty corner spot.

Farley's late-game heroics sent the game to overtime, but in double-OT, Cooper scored her second of the game to give UMass the win.
