Field Hockey set for key A-10 match Friday, Senior Day Sunday

LHU Field Hockey, Week 8 Notes: The Bald Eagles will cap their final homestand of the regular season this weekend.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team is set to cap its final homestand of the 2019 regular season this weekend, as the Bald Eagles play host to a pair of important late-season contests.
 
Lock Haven is riding a three-match win streak and sits at 7-6 overall.
 
On Friday (October 18), the Bald Eagles will host a key Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) match vs. perennial conference front-runner Massachusetts. UMass is 5-7 overall and 2-2 in league play. Friday's game with Massachusetts is set for a 3 p.m. start.
 
On Sunday (October 20), LHU will cap its four game homestand and play for the final time this season on Charlotte Smith Field. Lock Haven is 5-3 at home this year. The Bald Eagles Sunday-opponent will be Wagner, as the two schools meet for the very first time in the sport of field hockey. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start and LHU will honor its seniors before the start of the game.
 
News, notes & storylines heading into the weekend:
  • LHU is 7-6 overall entering the weekend.
  • The Bald Eagles are 4-1 in Atlantic 10 play, which has LHU holding the No. 2 spot in the A-10 standings entering this weekend.
  • Five of Lock Haven's seven wins have come at home this season on Charlotte Smith Field. LHU is 5-3 at home.
  • This weekend's home games vs. Massachusetts and Wagner are part of a four-game homestand to cap the 2019 regular season.
  • On the season, Lock Haven is 1-1 in the shootout and 2-2 overall when extra time is needed.
  • The Bald Eagles are riding a three-match win streak win includes wins at La Salle (10/4) along with home wins over Virginia Commonwealth and Lehigh last weekend. The wins over La Salle and VCU marked important conference wins.
  • Last Friday (10/11), Lock Haven shut out La Salle 1-0, thanks to a brilliant goal by Kayla Brathwaite and a tremendous effort from goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini.
  • On Sunday (10/13), LHU extended its win streak to three with a dominating 4-1 win over non-conference foe Lehigh.
  • Among several notable performances vs. Lehigh was that of goalkeeper Mariana Birdthistle, who got the spot-start and nearly pitched a shutout. She made five saves in the winning effort.
  • Standout freshman Jazmin Palma leads LHU in nearly every offensive category. She has three goals, three assists and nine total points. Her three assists and nine points are team-highs. Palma has registered a league-best 52 shots on the season.
  • Palma is one of three players with three goals on the season. Fellow-rookie Amy Stevens also has three goals on the season, thanks to a two-goal game last weekend vs. Lehigh. Brathwaite has three goals as well and all three came last week for LHU.
  • Seven total players have accounted for Lock Haven's 15 goals this season.
  • The defensive effort can't be overlooked, as the Bald Eagles have been outstanding. On the season, LHU has four shutouts, which leads the A-10 and ranks 16th in NCAA Division I field hockey.
  • Goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini has been brilliant for the Bald Eagles. She is 6-6 (12 starts, 12 games played, sat out vs. Lehigh) in nearly 775 total minutes of action.
  • Orlandini has 44 saves, four shutouts, a 1.31 goals-against-average and a .721 save-percentage.
  • Orlandini ranks No. 1 in the A-10 in shutouts and No. 2 in GAA. She ranked No. 5 in save-percentage. Her 1.31 GAA ranks 15th in Division I.
  • To date (7 wins this season), Hall of Fame head coach Pat Rudy now has 609 career coaching victories.

LHU sweeps weekly A-10 awards:
Monday (October 14) proved to be a historic day, as the Bald Eagles swept the weekly Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey awards. The trio of Kayla Brathwaite, Joaquina Orlandini and Amy Stevens took home the honors for The Haven, as Brathwaite was named the Atlantic 10 Conference's Player of the Week, Orlandini was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week and Stevens rounded out the trio of winners as the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Week. The trio helped Lock Haven cap a perfect 2-0 weekend which included a hugely important A-10 win over Virginia Commonwealth last Friday (Oct. 11). The 1-0 conference shutout-win over VCU helped LHU move into sole possession of second place in the Atlantic 10 standings, thanks to the Bald Eagles 4-1 conference mark.
 
The road ahead:
Following Sunday's Senior Day game vs. Wagner – the final home game of the regular season – the Bald Eagles will embark on a three-game road swing to cap the 2019 regular season. LHU will play at Saint Louis (A-10) on Sunday, October 27, before playing at Saint Francis (A-10) on November 1 and at Rider on November 3.
