ASHEBORO, N.C. – The Lock Haven University baseball team opened a four-game set at Winston-Salem State University today with a doubleheader and the Bald Eagles (4-6-1), dropped both games. The hosts edged out LHU, 4-3 in game one, and the Rams (16-7) competed the Saturday-sweep with a narrow 3-2 game-two victory.
The Rams took game one 4-3 after scoring the game-winner in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh.
Lock Haven's three game-one runs came off seven hits, while Winston-Salem scored its four runs on four hits.
Leading the way for the Bald Eagles at the plate in game one was
Max Joseph (Marlton, N.J./Harford Community College). Joseph was 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Liam McArthur (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall) went 2 for 2.
Joseph hit a two-run homer in the first.
Starting pitcher
Jesse Slinger (Pittsburgh/Youngstown State) worked 6 1/3 innings and struck out three, while scattering four WSSU hits.
In game two, the Rams scored first, plating one run in the bottom of the first
Lock Haven trailed 2-0 after three, but got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, thanks to a solo home run from Joseph. Lock Haven tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth.
However, once again, host-WSSU found the game-winning run in the bottom of the final frame and earned the sweep on another walk-off win.
Jimmy Webb (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) went 2 for 4 at the plate.
Scott Leitholf (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York), LHU's starting pitcher, went five innings with four strikeouts. He allowed four hits.
The Bald Eagles and Winston-Salem State will play again tomorrow. The first pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m.
