KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team's (15-14) historic season and 2019 postseason run came to an end tonight at top-seed Kutztown University (18-11), as the host Golden Bears downed the Bald Eagles 81-64 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal action.
LHU entered tonight's game as the PSAC East's No. 4 seed while Kutztown was the No. 1 seed out of the Eastern Division. Tonight marked the Bald Eagles first PSAC quarterfinal appearance in 28 years.
Leading the way tonight for Lock Haven was
Kendra Stanford (Philadelphia/Penn State Brandywine), who came off the bench to score 12 points.
Both
Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn) and
Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) netted 10 points. They led LHU in rebounds as well. Redman pulled in a game-high nine rebounds and Parker added five.
Freshman-standout
Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) hit a pair of 3's and finished with nine points. Both
Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land) and
Tiana Garvin (Philadelphia/Cecil Community College) scored eight points.
The Golden Bears led 43-23 at halftime after the hosts hit 13 3-pointers (13 of 23 from 3-point range, 57 %). KU finished the game with 16 3's which matched the single-game school record.
Kutztown won both games against Lock Haven during the two-game regular season PSAC East series. Kutztown earned a 66-55 win over Lock Haven back on January 30 and during the regular season finale just four days ago, the host Golden Bears earned a victory as well.
The Bald Eagles advanced to tonight's quarterfinal game after soaring by East Stroudsburg on Monday (March 4) night at home in First Round action. Lock Haven downed ESU 72-65 in a thriller.
Monday's win over East Stroudsburg marked the Bald Eagles first playoff win in 28 years. Prior to Monday, LHU's last playoff win came in 1991.
Tonight's PSAC quarterfinal appearance mark Lock Haven's first conference quarterfinal since the 1990-91 season. LHU advanced to the title game that season.
Lock Haven entered tonight with 15 wins, which already served as the most in a single season since the Bald Eagles won 17 during a 17-9 season in 2005-06.
Devine finished the season with 70 3's which is the all-time single-season school record. For her career, the junior has 139 made career 3-pointers, which leaves her just three away from tying the all-time school record for made 3's in a career (142).
The 15 wins pushed head coach
Jennifer Smith to 103 at Lock Haven, as earlier this season she became just the second head women's basketball coach in school history to go over 100 wins at The Haven. She now has 127 career collegiate wins.
