LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Senior
Kate Hooper (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary Anglican Girls School) opened the game with three goals on three shots in the first three minutes and her early dominance helped the Lock Haven University lacrosse team (4-13, 2-10 PSAC) close the 2019 season with a thrilling victory. The Bald Eagles held off visiting Edinboro University (3-14, 2-10 PSAC) 15-14 in an instant Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) classic.
Â
Hooper was one of two Haven-seniors honored in the pregame Senior-Day ceremony. The other was defender
Anneli Starry (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) who made a brilliant stick check in the game's final seconds and caused an Edinboro turnover that sealed the Lock Haven victory.
Â
Hooper finished with five goals and one assist on the way to a six-point outing.
Â
Braxtin Reddinger (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) came up huge all over the field for the Bald Eagles. She finished with six points on four goals and two assists. Reddinger influenced the game even more so on draw controls, which was a major difference maker in the outcome of the game. Lock Haven held an important 18-13 advantage in draw controls and Reddinger had 12 of LHU's 18.
Â
Loren Librizzi (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) netted two goals and dished out two assists.
Krysta Reading (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) added two goals and
Caitlin Morrow (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had three points (1G, 2A).
Addy Borkowski (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) rounded out the scoring with a goal.
Â
LHU goalkeeper
Lauren Girardi (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) made five saves and finished the season with a single-season school record of 209.
Â
Despite the strong start, the game was tied at 5-5 with 5:57 left in the first half. The Bald Eagles responded and five straight goals helped LHU double up Edinboro at halftime, 10-5.
Â
Edinboro started the second half quickly as the visitors were not planning to go away easy. As both teams exchanged second-half goals in a thrilling half, things became deadlocked at 13-13 with 13:08 left in the game. Lock Haven responded with two goals and led 15-13 with 11:05 left in the contest.
Â
The final minutes proved to be an even test for both and a late-Edinboro goal made it a one-goal game, as LHU clung to a 15-14 lead with 10:23 left.
Â
Starry – a Lock Haven senior – was credited with two caused turnovers in the game, but none was bigger than the one with seconds left, as Edinboro looked to tie the contest as time ticked away.
Â
Starry's outstanding defensive effort clinched the Bald Eagles' season-ending win.
