BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's tennis team was in action today on Day 1 of the 2019 Bloomsburg Invitational competing against players from host-Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg and Shippensburg.

According to head coach John Machak, the team played tough all-around and he was impressed with the effort in the first tournament of the season.

In Flight 2 of singles play, Victoria Bensinger (Northampton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) provided a highlight for the Bald Eagles, as she won a set in singles play. She won the first set, but fell in set two, before dropping the tiebreaker.

Delani Wolever (Northumberland, Pa./Bucktail) and Hailey Risley (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) competed in Flight 1 singles play.

Jayna Brodnicki (Morris, Pa./North Penn-Liberty) joined Bensinger in Flight 2 singles play, while both Kayla Mushala (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) and McCartney Register (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) played in Flight 3 of the singles bracket.

For LHU, all players played two doubles-matches today to go along with two singles matches, so it certainly proved to be a busy day for Lock Haven on the courts.

LHU will be right back in action tomorrow (Sunday, September 22) as the Bald Eagles wrap up play at the two-day Bloomsburg Invitational.

Last Sunday (September 15) marked a special day for LHU athletics as it served as the official return of women's tennis. The Bald Eagles hosted Lycoming in the first official event of the 2019-20 season.

It marked the first match for a LHU women's varsity tennis team since the fall of 1992. It was announced back on August 6, 2018 that LHU was adding two varsity sports and women's tennis was one of them. Previously, LHU sponsored varsity women's tennis from for 25 seasons from 1968 through 1992.

Historically, LHU has had success on the courts, as the Bald Eagles went undefeated during the 1973 and 1983 seasons, and program holds over 100 total victories. Lock Haven has also crowned seven individual conference champions.
