SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (15-13, 12-10 PSAC East) fell to Shepherd (21-8, 14-8 PSAC East) 59-81 in round one of the 2020 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Monday evening, ending the Bald Eagles postseason run.
After a scoreless minute and a half to start the game, the Rams went on a 10-0 run before the Bald Eagles were able to get on the board. Lock Haven began to slowly eat away at the lead, cutting the deficit in half as
Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn) made it 6-12 with just under three minutes remaining in the first. The Bald Eagles momentum was cut short at the end of the period, as a seven-point run from Shepherd in the final minute gave the Rams a 22-8 advantage heading in to the second.
The two teams traded points back-and-forth for most of the second period as Lock Haven struggled to make any kind of dent in Shepherd's dominating lead. By the end of the second, the Rams had built their lead to 17 points as they took a 41-24 lead in to the break.
Shepherd continued to push ahead in the third quarter, leading the Bald Eagles 62-40 as the teams headed in to the final period of play. While Lock Haven was able to stay to-to-toe with the Rams in the final quarter, it wasn't enough for the comeback as the Bald Eagles fell to Shepherd 81-59.
Leading the Bald Eagles effort was
Marena Lonardi (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) with 20 points, eight rebounds, two steals and a block.
Jaynelle Robinson (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport (Monroe CC)) recorded her eighth double-double of the season, notching 12 points and 15 rebounds, and
Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCasky) rounded out the double figure scorers, adding 11.
Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn), who was named the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week this morning, was a force on the glass yet again, notching 10 rebounds for her third consecutive game in the double figures.
Senior
Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land) recorded eight points in her final game as a Bald Eagle. Devine, who holds the LHU record for career threes, notched two threes tonight to finish her career with 203.
Lock Haven entered tonight's game as the PSAC East No. 5 seed, while Shepherd was the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Division. Tonight's matchup was the first PSAC Tournament appearance for Shepherd, who joined the conference for the 2019-20 season.
The Rams won both games against Lock Haven in the regular season, topping the Bald Eagles 71-64 on January 11 before defeating Lock Haven 72-56 on February 1.
LHU's 15 wins this season matches their win total from last year, and is the most in a single season since the Haven won 17 in 2005-06.
